RAGE IN MUD AT LATONIA Changed Conditions Bring Upsets in Several of the Contests. 1 1 Ocean Sweep Wins the Main Race of the Day King Gorin Takes a Purse. LATONIA, Ky., October C Changed track conditions prevailed as a result of a hard rain yesterday, and it favored those horses which run well in muddy going. The card was a good one for a Monday offering, and it brought out several of the better grade of racers. The attendance was again surprisingly large, by far the largest Monday crowd that has been noted this season. Though there was no outstanding feature, the sport was wholesome and finishes close. The main upset developed during the afternoon was the decisive defeat of Jorice. an overwhelming favorite in the ,000 purse race at three-quarters. She acted as if she was handicapped by the going and lacked her customary high early speed. The race developed th closest finish of the afternoon, with George J. Longs Ocean Sweep the winner by a nose from Blue Paradise. King Gorin earned his first purse of the fall season when he won the fifth race after a hard effort to outstay General Haig. Gallaher Bros, finally took a purse when Serbian showed the way to the others in the sixth race and won from Texas Special. The Swimmer showed improvement in the fourth race and won as his rider pleased. Hereafter was the favored one here, but Shillings ride on him was inferior and he failed of getting a portion of the purse. Former jockey Roscoe Goose broke into the ranks of winnlng"awuers when Tils" Louis A. landed the purse in the second race from eleven other maidens. The initial race found Emden. a first time starter in nearly two years, in high regard, but he ran as if he was short and finished in the ruck. Words- o Wisdom being the leader from the start. General Glenn, which was in for 00, was claimed by J. Keith for ,700 from the second race. According to the latest canvass by manager Matt J. Winn there will be at least a dozen starters in the Latonia Championship and possibly fourteen as follows: Lord Brighton, Mad Hntter, Polka Dot, Natural Bridge. Stockwell, Constantine. War Spirit, Vnlcauite. King Plaudit, John O., Texas Special. Rapid Day. Sway and Chasseur. Stockwell and Sway are the hopes of the Kentuckians to thwart the easterners pretentions to the 0,000 stake. Sam O. Hihlreth sent word here today to manager Winn that Mad Hatter and Lord Brighton had been shipped from New York and would reacli here tomorrow. C. M. Garrison, owner of Be Frank, winner of the Latonia Derby, also sent word that he would ship two horses with the Hihlreth consignment, presumably He Frank and one other, to race in the Latonia Cup. Larry Waterburys Chasseur will also be a starter in the Latonia Championship Stakes according to advices received today from P. T. Chinn. who has the horse in charge. King Plaudit is expected to reacli hero Wednesday.
