RUTHERFORD COMMITTEE IN MANITOBA WINNIPEG, Can., October 16. Dr. J. G. Rutherford of the board of railway commissioners, inquiring into horse racing and betting in Canada, opened a liearing here yesterday. W. I. Smale, secretary of the Manitoba Live Stock Association, and manager of the Brandon Fair Association, stated that the executive of the Brandon Faird does not want betting on the race meetings in connection with the Fair. Since it was abolished, he declared, much greater interest lias been taken in horse racing, and the sport has been cleaner since there is a fifty cents tax on every person attending a race meeting here. Outside of exhibitions Winnipeg is.-not much concerned in the inquiry.
