SPEED UP AT NEW ORLEANS Man and Beast Take Advantage of Prevailing Fine Weather. Steward H. P. Conkling Latest Arrival Whitney String on the Way. NEW ORLEANS, La., November IS. The arrival today from the east of Herman 1. Conkling, who will serve as one of the stewards at the coming Jefferson Park meeting, which begins on Thanksgiving Day, completes the official family for that course for the opening and first three days. Judge Joseph A. Murphy and starter Edward Trite, two other officials, will not be able to get here until after the Howie meeting ends, but the" remainder are all now on the scene and getting things" in readiness for the inauguration of the season of winter sport. Mr. Conkling reports that a large number of turf followers will head this way from Baltimore within the nest few days and equally as many will come from New York. Plenty of activity was the rule again at both tracks today and the trainers are beginning to speed up their charges a. bit. The weather was like summer and the good break in this respect is proving beneficial to the horsemen, as they are hsing given ! every opportunity to have their horses fit and ready for the opening of the winter season. Incidentally the coming two-year-olds will be pretty well advanced in their training for the Fair Grounds meeting, a large number of them being out on the track eaclt morning. Several large racing establishments, including that of Albert Simons and B. A. .Tones, are said to be on the way here, the former coming from Baltimore and the latter from Parnell, Mo. Tiie only stable to get in today was that of Smith and Farrar, witli sis horses in it. They are Lazy Lou, Who Cares, Toto, Singleton, Lady Brummel and a yearling. Stalls have been bedded for a number of owners for a week past, but they are slow to get in, due to a shortage of express horse cars in the north and east, it is said. JOCKEY KELSAY GETS IN. Jockey W. Kolsay, who rode with much success in the east for former Congressman G. W. Loft this .year, was an arrival today. He came from Maryland and he said that practically all of the goad veteran riders from that section will be on hand here after the Bowie meeting closes. Another rider to get in was W. Hoag, who is connected witli the Wnldeck Stable. Trainer Ham Kcene will bring five horses of this establishment here next week. 0. It. Ellison was among a number of the regulars to land here today. He has been taking a rest since the Kentucky season closed. Charles Hawk sold Medusa to Paul Ford, a local sportsman, and the latter also purchased Ermitana. He is a newcomer to racing and expects to add to his stable as the winter progresses. Jockey Jimmy Butwell will ride here during the winter for L. J. Roinheimer, whose horses recently came down from New York. Butwell plans to be here in time for the opening of the Jefferson Park .meeting. Jockey Danny Connelly got in today and lie will ride at both meetings for J. L. Solomon. Andy Blakeley has obtained the services of jockey II. Myers, the apprentice rider under contract to "V. It. Coo for the winter here. Myers will leave ISowie the latter part of this week to report to IJIaUeley. S. A. Clopton will send ten of the J. O. Talbott horses to Jefferson Park for the racing there while the remainder will be freshened up for the Fair Groundn meeting. C. T. Worthington will likewise split his stable, keeping only his seven yearlings at the Fair Grounds until the first of the year. Five of the Howard Oots-Mose Lowenstein outfit will go to the Shrewsbury track.
