HUGE CALCUTTA SWEEP SWINDLE English Sharpers Sell Half a Million Dollars Worth of Spurious Tickets. The world-wide Investments in the famous Calcutta sweep was recently taken advantage of by a gang of swindlers, who flooded England with alleged Calcutta Turf Club tickets. The following reference to the matter is from nn Indian paper: "More than 00,000 1ms been secured by a gang of swindlers in connection with Calcutta Turf Club Derby Sweepstake. The leaders of the gang secured some genuine tickets and employed one of their number who is a printer to produce 100,000 spurious tickets, which, except in regard to the paper on which they are printed, which Is of slightly thicker texture, were an exceedingly close imitation of the I genuine tickets. The refusal of the Calcutta Turf Club to pay on these tickets lias only just become known in London." The repudiation of the bogus tickets was a tremendous shock for those of their English holders, who flattered themselves they had drawn prizes. Genuine tickets for the sweep can only be obtained through members of the Calcutta Turf Club.
