! • • 1 GREAT BROOD MARES OF LONG AGO ALICE HAWTHORN AND BEESWING GRAND RACE MARES AND DAMS OF GREAT RACERS — POCAHONTAS AND MARTHA LYNN NQ ACCOUNT IN RACING, BUT WORLD FAMOUS THROUGH THEIR PRODUCE By EXILE To proceed with the famous brood mares. Emilia, bay, 1838, by Young Emilius— Persian, by Whisker. Did not win; dam of Australian, which sired the dams of Bramble, Iroquois and Falsetto, and sired Spendthrift, sire of Hastings, which sired Fair Play, the sire of Man o War. Emilia also foaled LHrice. ancestress of Spinaway. Handspun. Tanya. Tangle. Golden Maxim. Jim GatTney and many others of the best sort, yet I have no record of Fmiilias ever having won a race. Alice Hawthorn, bay. 1838. by Muley Moloch Rebecca, by Lottery. At two did not win; at three won £50 and a siher cup at Northallerton; at four Alice Hawthorn wakes up and wins seven races, and this year was only once beaten, and this when she finished thicd to David and Crllina for the £100 Cup of one and one-quarter miles at Manchester; at five Alice Hawthorn won eighteen races, including a number of Queens Plates, and one of £230 at Stockton; at six won twenty and one-half races, the Gold Yase at Ascot. Goodwood Cup and Don-cister Cup; at seven won three out of her nine race.s. After all this it was thought advisable to retire her, and .she then missed twice to Lanercost. 1847-48. and her first, the colt Young Hawthorn, by Lanercost, was foaled in 1849. followed the next year by Lord Fauconberg. and of him it is said "he was a bad race horse running at two. three and four years and winning only a Queens Plate. Alice Hawthorn foaled Lady Hawthorn to Windhound in 1854, and in 1857 the Derby and Ascot Gold Cup winner and sire of Atlantic, Thormanby. put in an appearance, and he was followed by Sweet Hawthorn the next year. Sweet Hawthorn is ancestress of Miss Jummy Oaksi. Polar Star, the Argentine sire Orbit. Ben Battle. Glass Doll Oaks, Phocion. the Idle Hour sire North Star III.. Corisande. Bona Yista and Sir Yisto ; to Lady Flaw-lorn. another daughter, trace Tyrant. Wool Winder St. l.egen, the Frenchman Le Sancy. Hauteur, I-lormtine. the Grand Prix winner Quo Yadis and Houriess. In the tace of all this, is there any foundation for the argument that hard run fillies do not make good brood mares? fadghteen winning races as a five-year-old and twenty and one half wins the next year is a record that will take some beating, most of them over the Cup distance, too. and then go to the rtud and foal a Derby and Ascot Gold Cup winner, and two daughters to which trace many of the best horses to be found in all quarters of the globe. Martha Lynn. bay. 1838, by Mulatto Leda, by Filho da Put a. At two won two small rrtces and one small race as a three-year-old. Dam of the Derby and St. Leger winner Yolti-sjeur. which beat, as a three-year-old. Flying Dutchman for the Doncaster Cup; and Martha Lynn also foaled Maid of Hart. Compiegnes dam. Volley, granddani of Lord Clifden. and Lamballo; Eulogy, ancestress of Carbine; Carnage. Dutch Oven. Imperatrice. Imperieuse. I ri ars Balsam. Xaintrailles. F.nguerrande. La Jonchere. Heltcr Skelter. Burgomaster and iohren; all of these are de.-cended from the little old plater Martha Lynn. Crucifix, bay. 1837. by Priam Octaiana. by Octavian. At two won eight and one half races, including the Hopeful. Clearwcil. Prendergast. and dead heated with Gibraltar for the Criterion Stakes at Newmarket, and won the Lavant and Mobcombe Stakes at Goodwood; at three won the One and Two Thousand Guineas and Oaks; dam of Surplice, winner of the Derby and St. Leger, which, however, failed as a sire, and Cowl, a good stake winner and sire of a number of good brood mares, and to Crucifix trace Adam. Ajax. Placida and Seaforth. Pocahontas, bay. 1837. by Glencoe Marpessas. by Muley. Did not win; dam of the Two Thousand Guineas and St. Leger winner Stockwell. one of the best of all sires; King Tom. the Cup horse Rataplan. Knight of St. Patrick. Knight of Kars. Heroine of Lucknow, ancestress of Clamart and Clover; Boarding School Miss, to which trace Maribyrnong and Galloper Light; Ayacanora, dam of Camelia Oaks, Rayon dOr St. Leger1, Apremont. Chamant Two Thousand Guineas i and Indiana, ancestress of Kizil Kourgan, which beat Sceptre for the Grand Prix, and all this has been accomplished by the descendants of a mare u-uch does not appear to have been able to win a race. Lollypop. black, 1836, by Starch or Voltaire Belinda, by Blacklock. Did not win; dam M Sweetmeat, winner of twenty-three races out of twenty-four starts, including the Queens Vase. Ascot and Doncaster Stakes, and is also the sire of Macaroni, Parmesan, Carnival. Plum Pudding, all of them good brood mare sires; surely there is something in Herod line horses for brood mare sires. To Lollypop also trace Hastings, Plaudit and Handsome. Beeswing, bay, 1833, by Dr. Syntax daughtrr of Ardrossan. At two won two races; at ihree won two race.s. £250 and a gold cop at Newcastle; at four won six races, including three gold cups; at five wen seven races; at six ju.-t beginning to get good, won eleven races; at seven won ten races, among them the Doncaster Cup: at eight won nine races; at nine walked over for the Queens Plate at Chester, the same afternoon Alice Hawthorn won the Free Handi-rap there; Beeswing also that same year won the Ascot Gold Cup. beating The Nob. St. Fiancis and Lanercost; brat the St. Leger winner Charles Twelfth for the two-mile Gold Cup at Newcastle; again beat Charles Twelfth for the Doncaster Cup. and also the Derby winner Attila. I have heard it stated that Beeswing was hacked a couple of years in The Row before being put regularly to breeding, but cannot vouch for the truth of this story. Anyway, the Mud Book shows her to have had the chestnut colt Old Port in 1844. and later the Two Thousand winner Nuiinykirk. and in 1848 the St. Leger winner Newnnnster, and afterward the fillies Honeydew and Honeysuckle, these all by Touchstone. To Honeysuckle trace St. Serf. Ayrshire, Laureate, Slieve Gallion. William Rufus. the best of the two-year old fillies of the ast season. Constancy; Mrs. Buiterwick. Melton. Perth, Sunflower II.. sire of Walnut Hall. etc.- Bradwardine. sire of Consuelo. dam of George Smith; Lismaine, dam of the good Aus- ;ralian sire Linacre. and all of the members of the Futurity family of Mackette. M. ; Novelty. Pennant and Sweep. Verily. Beeswing was a wonder, judged from any standpoint. They tace and they dont; th: only brood mare guide is the blood. Therefore it is well enough to bear in mind that Beeswing a ;i by the Matchem sire Dr. Syntax and produced her best. Nunnykirk, Newminster and Honeysuckle, by the inbred Eclipse horse Touchstone. Pocahontas. which is descended fr m Herod in the male line, foaled Stockwell and Rataplan to the Fclipse horse Ihe Baron, and thai Alice Hawthorn, which is a member of the house of Eclipse, foaled her best. Thormanby and Lady Hawthorn, when mated with the Herod horse Windhound.
