NAMES AND MISNAMES OF HORSES BAD TASTE COMMON IN NOMENCLATURE, BUT AS A RULE IT HAS OCCURRED THAT REALLY GREAT RACERS HA VE BEEN GIVEN APPROPRIATE NAMES B y W, S. VOSBU R G H March 1 i- the date for claiming names for the two-year-olds of the ceasing racing season fouls of 1918J anil it appears to nie that some remark- on the names nf race horses miht. therefore, not be out Of place if we can induce owner- to display more taste than -on f them displayed in pa-t years. "Some names inspire hih thoughts and heroic aims, while other- entail meanness and vulgarity." remark- the late Mr. Washington Irving. Take some uf the names of horses raetaag within the past year, such as lid BUI Lender. Charlie Leydecker and Lilly Kelly. 1hoebu-: What a name To till the speaking trump of hippie fame! Sonic owner- seem unable to rtee above aajch names a- Jack thi- or John that. Billy this and Joe that: and if the horse fails to race up to expectation- the partial for wl i they are named certainly cannot feel tattered. Then, we have those curious compound names, made by taking half of the name of sire and the same of the dam. which produces such mon-tro-ith - a- Iolroma. by lolymelus from Lactwma; and Flor-ain. by Sain from Florika. In addition we have «nrh things a- My Loots. His NMbs. Pirate McCee. etc Such nomenclature conveys a bad Impression of racing among people unfamiliar with racing— the great general public. They are apt to conclude that racing men are an underbred lot without taste, education or invention. Whereas, it i- due rather to inaptitude. Cervantes tills u- that Don Qtdxote took four day-in lading an appropriate name for hi- hor-e. There i- some comfort in the fact that our really great race hor-e- have, a- a rule, been well named. It i- al-o a cartons fact that a badly n. lined hor-e ha- -ehlom become a great race horsi — it is the lot that •ran unplaced" that comprint the Jack Smith-. Joe BroWBS, etc. It i- an additional fact that a badly named horse ha- seldom — I might say. never -won the Derby in Kauland. There seems a retributive element of ill luck in the cases of badly named animal- whose owner- have aspired to win the Epsom classic. Look over the list of Derby winners and we lind such names as Ormonde. Cremorne. Hermit. Don-ca-ter. Cicero. Melton. Calopin. Favoniu-. Kettledrum. Spearmint. Macaroni. Cossack. Mameluke. Iriam. Plenipotentiary, Iroquois, Harvester, Silvio. Ladas, Orlando. Gladiatear, Durbar. Trdaiartan. Yoltiseur. etc. gems of nomenclature and worthy to be enrolled as winner- of the worlds greatest race. Due of the neatest bits of naming was that found in the Stud Look of the progeny of the mare Flight, foaled is:i7. She was the dam of Hegira, Mecca. Mahomet. Medina and Koran. The late Judge C. B. Thomas, becoming the owner id Hegira. carried it on. Hegira l foal was called ilira. which be-came the dam of Ilimyar. but Una also had Kamadan. Ami! and Haiziim. Ramadan is the name of the ninth month of the Mohammedan calendar. As to Amit. it is the Mo-letn war cry — "Aatit! Amit" Death: Death! when they repulsed the Korei-hites at the battle of Ohod, six miles from Medina. A- to Halsnm, it i- the name of the mare ridden by Mahomet at the battle of Leder. of which Mr. Irving write-: "A pea-ant -aid. Suddenly we beheld a great cloud -ailing toward u- and within it were the neighing of -teed- and harping of trumpet-, and we heard the voice of the Archangel as lie urged hi-mare -S;,ed: Speed h llaiziini" " Lut opportunities for -ueh nomenclature -ehlom offer. Mr. Thomas . McDowell lost a good chance through his brood marc. I.racegirdle. to follow it up with the name- famous in connection with the drama. Mi-s Lracegirdlc wa- the leading n tie-- of her any, and -ueh names as Cougreve. Wyeherly. Garrick, Kean, Kembte, Ablngton, Siddons, Barry, Farreii. Matliadj, Otway, Ma-singer. Sheridan. Addison, libber. Irving. Boueicauit, Muekstone, etc. The custom of giving a horse a nam ■ suggested by that of hi- -ire or dam. or both, is excellent, as it a — i-ts the memory in recalling his identity. Some such efforts have been quite happy, such as Ballot, son of Voter: Celt, from Maid of Erin, or L-eoba. -on of Lroom-tick. Kingcraft, the English Derby winner, wa- well named a- a -on of King Tom and Woodcraft. So was Calliuule far a -on of Moorhen. Bwynford, the BngUsb St. I.eger winner, i- aptly named, he being a son of John oLaunt. and it will be remembered that John oCaunt Duke of Lancaster and father of Henry IV. I married Katherine Swynford. Then we have Hermit, -on of Be elusion; I.emberg. from Callicia: Pretender, by Adventurer, etc. Of course, thi- can also be used to produce cuiiou- results — an English horse, son of Worcestershire, having In en named Lee and lerrin-. Of course, MUM one will ask what should be considered good taste in naming horses. My own idea is that the name of a hor-e -hould never be of two word-. One word, and it a- Short a- po-s ible — a good shouting name. Purchase, which wa- named after an old village near New York, i- a fair sample. Roanier was an excellent name: so were Cudgel. L.iniu- and Hannibal. Owner- often complain they cannot lind a name that ha- not already been cho-en. hut a gazetteer, a dictionary, a railway time table will -apply an idea. But in order to show my own idea of tire style of name appropriate for race horses 1 am going to present a list of names which seem suitable. No doubt man] of them have been claimed already, but surely there will be a few which can iie used if tin y should meet the approval of owners, although 1 do not oiler them for adoption, but. as already stated, to convey my idea of proper naming: SUGGESTED NAMES FOR COLTS.
