DAMASK WINS IN A CANTER ♦ Whitney Crack Runs Away From His Opponents When Called On. » Jockey Coltiletti Suspended for the Meeting — Apple Jack II. Springs a Surprise. a NEW ORLEANS. La., February 23.-One rare on this afternoons attractive card overshadowed the others in interest and was largely iii-triimental in bringing out the big crowd in attendance. This race was fifth on the days program, being the George Washington Ilamliiap. for three-year-ohts, at a mile and seventy yards, with llainask the top weight under the -toadying impost af l-li pounds. In il the Whitney call made his title clear to the Louisiana Derby, so far as his opponents in todays line an- com erned. However, there are other eligibles which will have to be considered when Derby day arrives on March 17. In todays race Damask demonstrated clearly that he can caii.v high weight successfully while running fast and qualified handsomely, not only for the I.ousiana Derby, bat for more important races to come later on. Today lie was reserved behind the leader- to Hie stretch under a hard pull, then rushed past them in a twinkling when released tf estraint anil won away off by himself. Ballet Proof set a fast pace and ran a gallant race, hot Damask gave him six pounds and a six lengths beating so easily that probably ten pound- more on his musculsr back would not have altered the resnli. iieaeral clenn stays well and bested Bread Man in a hot struggle for third place. If. as htal years racing paints out. Mr. Whitney has several better three -year olds than Damask, lie -hoiild win about all the races for three year-elds that Maii o War does not appropriate this year. A sensation of Hie day was the sitspen-ion of jockey Coltiletti for the remainder of the meeting. Bar Oae waa .1 heavily backed favorite for the sixth race and the lad had the mount. The horse ran a nail race and Coltiletti was set down on the ground that he has b t riding form and with no imputation thai he did not ride hone-tly. Some fast sprinters eonlended in the fourth race, of which I.egoial. As-ume and U Stone came in for Ihe most support, bat the Voter gelding Apple Jack II.. which ha- a habit of doing the unexpected now and then, showed his heels to the others all the way and won a fast rate from Troilue by a good length and a half, with Hegotal third. Ihe winner wai at 12 to 1. but carried some wise money anyhow. Some indifferent two year-old maidens coatested the opening race, with No Ki ding a good favorite. but at the finish the California - bred V in was first by a length, with Freddie aeeaad and Baa-geome third. No Fooling was interfered with ami fiaished next to la-t. LIGHT WEIGHT HELPS LITTLE MAUDIE. Little Maudie was in light in the aeeaad rate and a good favorite. Close up from the start, -he sprinted lata the lead iu the stretch and placed the purs- to the credit of Jim Arthur without trouble. Ii ■ i.allant fini-hing second and Silvey Shapiro third. Pram where she go, off the latter ran the best race of all. Having up lis pound- ling-a Uanj seemed overweighted iu the third race and several were preferred t" him in lac betting, but the old Star Shoot gelding put in such good work that at the finish he was a half length in front of GoUvale, with Poaltaey a close up third. American Eagle was always tin- favorite for this race, but was always badly heat "ii. GUsStal had been threatening for -ome time :.nd made goad by taking the sixth race from Oreaaa, while Cabana triumphed over Charm tag and Mab in the seventh. Trainer -lames Ranre of the II. P. Whitney stable was among today- arrivals and. saddling Daaaaak, prevented that racer from being coupled with S. A. Cloptons Radlet Proof, as Clapton has been acting as substitute trainer of the Whitney horses during Albert Simons" Blares. Rowe is here to make arrangements for the shipment of the Whitney horses. While no definite plans have yet been made by IJowe it is said that part of the stting bere will be sliipjual to Kentucky and the p mainder to Havre de Grace. Alter the poor ride I ha I Coltiletti gave Itar One in the sixih race the stewards handed down th" following: "We believe that Coltiletti has lost his form. We do not believe that tile boy i- riding fraudetit-ly. but think the racing would he best served I v -u-pending him for the meeting. This ruling is without prejudice tf. other associations. •• Beginning Tuesday and for the remainder of the meetiag post tim. in the first race will be 2:1.". p. m.
