SOME VIEWS OF AN EMINENT TRAINER Prefers Probable Whitney Kentucky Candidates, but Likes Donnacona Also. MOW VllllK. N. V.. Kcbriiary M.- Kutrios dssc for the Kentucky Derby March 1. and it is only natural that a- closing time approaches interest in the ino-t cherished of all American races increases. With Mr. Kiddles determination not to enter Man o War, the undisputed champion of 391!. it is hard to suy just which of the Ihree-year-olds of the present sea-ou would be considered as the top of the band, but it is believed most of the eastern horsemen would award that distinction to John r. ;rier. He i- a food looking colt, with plenty of size, and his action is faultless. While his sire. Whisk Broom II.. has yet to scud a stayer to the race-, there i- goud reason to believe John 1. Crier will prove the exception. He is the best of the Whitney siring, uiiiue-t ionably. Wildair i- a remarkably haml-i barm, but nothing like as smooth gaited as his stable companion. John I". Grier. The I.oft -table i- well fixed with Donnacona and On Watch. On Watch aras a good, game .-,.ii last year and at home in any kind of going, and while his two half-brothers. Iltima Thttlc and Hidden Jewel, were only fair -printers, tin- thrcc-yoar-old gives promi-e of lx-iiig a goad liorse at any distance. Of the I.oft pair the writer pre fen Ihuinaeona. He was second to DaaatampM in the Waldeii Stakes at one mile. Dominique was giving him twelve pounds, but forced Donnaeona |tiite arid*, when coming into the stntch. Another thing that makes one like Donnacona is the fact that he had an easy preparation for the Waldeii and was improving right up to the end of the season. Dominium; also did well at the windup of the sea-oti and aras the best celt that started at Iimlico and is equally at home in any kind of going. Still, it isnt believed he is a IK-rby horse. Hi- -ire and dam arm only sprinters. lonstaney and Cleopatra are the two eastern fil-lie- best suited to such a race as the Kentucky Derby, and His Choice is a sssnihtMty. KING THRUSH BEST ROSS CANDIDATE. It is not likely that the J. K. I.. Koss stable will repoa. .t- victory of la-t year. King Thrnsdi was tie- best two -year -old colt of the Canadian Sportsmans -table mat year, and he was a decidedly bad gaited colt. Royal Jester would have to improve a great deal more than Sir IJarton did to be in any way dangerous. Prince Pal is one of the best of the probable Kentucky Derby candidates. He is a colt, of faultless breeding and a grand individual, can run in innd and stay. Kinburn. Captain Mack and Augon are possibilities. Lorraine and Margery Hyues are probably best of the Kentucky owned fillies. Ethel Gray showed assne wonderful trials, and as she is a big. grow thy filly, will umloiibledly show better in public this year and may be one of the be-t of her -ex. Down in Virginia Killy Garth is training a good game colt that can run in any kind of going, and if he has wintered well Diazes will have to be resckoaed with "Bet by day." He made a suceeasfal effort in Kentucky last fall when he journeyed West for the ltreedor- Futurity. Dama-k i- a fair colt, but hardly of iH-rby caliber. Golden Broom had as much speed a- any two-year-old of the year, but was troubled with bad feet and at best may be only a sprinter. His sire was a first -class niiler. Mi— Jemima ahaand a lot of high class the first half of last -ea-on. However, there ale but few "Regrets/ and it would indeed be a surprise if a filly should win the richest of all Kentucky Darby*. Unless there is a decided and quick change in tin weather about New York the eastern horses will have to ship to Kentucky or somewhere south to Irain. Ip to date theyve been getting shed work only, and it is time they wen- beginning to gallop. The Derby i- run from "end to end." and it lake- a fit bane to win it. If John P. Crier and the I.oft pair. On Watch and Donnacona. go to the post. Good judges Ix-lieve one of the three will be the Derby winner of HOC*, and that Biases will 1»- thereabouts.
