TAILOR MAID A SURPRISER * Takes the Main Jefferson Park Race and Defeats Bullet Proof. a Tenite Runs Fast Half and Makes a New Track Record — George Starr Defeats Arnold. row ORLEANS. I.a.. February °S.— Quite a number of the beat horses in training here started in various races at Jefferson Park this afternoon to the hearty entertainment of the great assemblage of spectators present. Weather and track conditions were of the best brand and a consequence was the establishment of -ever.il new track records. The main race of the day was the fifth, a dash of a mile and seventy yards, for which, in view of ais recent good racing. P.nllet Proof was made a Strong favorite, with Sands of Pleasure next in favor. The upshoot was a grievous up-ct and the layers kept all the money. Courtship set a sprinting pace to the tar turn, then mat all interest in the affair and dropped lo the rear. Then Bullet Proof took up the running and put his backers on goad terms with themselves. Kut in the last eighth Tailor Maid loomed up and in a fast finish had ihe best of Bullet Proof by a half length, with Matinee Idol a bad third. Tailor Maid was the extreme outsider in the betting and had raced poorly ill her la-t two race-, but she not only won today, hut made a new track record in doing it. In the first ran- of the day the two year-olds .v. re ngula a-ked to cover a half mile, and a new track record. a fast one. too. resulted. Ken Valel wi:h I.vke up was the ucefWiml one, but iDt filly Tenite showed a high order of speed, IUd taking a quirk had ran with -m h speed hat when she had won by a length and a half from Pluribus it was found that she hud covered the di-tance in 47.-.. a murk that will stand -ome shooting at. Petunia finished well and outstayed Ken Valet for third money. The fourth race was contested by uiaM of the fastest sprinter* h. re. with Arnold the favorite and American Ace a much fancied second choice. With such speedy horses in contention at. such a short distance as file eighths luck was almost bound to play a par!. It was George Starrs luck to get away first, and making the most of his chance, and lie led all the way and won from Arnold by a few inches in an exciting finish. Ticklish ran a goad race and was ;, close third. American Ace seems to lack the speed that characterized his racing la-t rear and never flattered his backers. Bobby Allen wa- away with an advantage in the ieebnd rue and made every post a winning one, hut he had little io spare at the end. where the improving Dixie Carroll ran him to a head and neat Bringhurst by a half length for second money. Port Light and Btruseun finished close up. POUitney Won the third race from Shaiulon by three length-, principally becanae L I.yke was in hi- back, while Shnndon was piloted bv J ludge. Simpleton, backed from IS to 1 down to s to 1. hurt the feeling* and bankrolls of the layer- when be -imply ran away from the others in the sixth race and won from tjueeti Klon.le, running the same distance in the sanie time in which Tailor Maid had made a new track record in the preceding race. Crump-all was in good trim today and took the seventh race at MMBg odds, with P.engali a goad second
