THE WAY TO SHIP THOROUGHBREDS Dr F W Ashe the Eastern Expert Gives Advice on Neglected Subject Here are some uptodate and sensible sugges ¬ tions about shipping thoroughbreds to and from racing grounds prepared at Daily Kacing Forms request by Dr F AY Ashe an expert who lias been particularly successful in caring for the horses sent to and from Cuba in recent seasons seasonsThere There has always been more or less lo s of life in the shipment of horses especially on long jour ¬ neys and the question has been often asked is to the cause of it In my opinion most cases are due to carelessness or negligence negligenceIn In all shipments the animals should be iu fit condition for the trip and the conveyance pul into a perfectly sanitary condition The first step iu complete disinfection consists in the removal of all loose dust and dirt This should be followed by a thorough cleansing with hot water and soap Dust must be removed from all rracks crevices and corners until the surface is fully exposed and clean This requires sweeping scrubbing and scraping and tearing out of rotten or porous material In some cases the thoroughness of the cleansing process is of more importance than the selection of the dis ¬ infectant Ordinary disinfection does not penetrate a dried coat of manure on woodwork that has be ¬ come porous by decay decayAfter After a thorough cleansing and disinfect hit the car is ready for occupancy The stalls should be bedded with straw or sawdust not that the animal will lie down in cramped quarters but a great many horses will not urinate unless there is some ¬ thing under them as the liquid will splash on their legs and render them uncomfortable This is well demonstrated when a lurse is turned into a well bedded stall or stopped on a soft road The first impulse on the part of the animal is to relieve itself A great cause of sickness in shipping is due to the retention of urine urineThe The car should be well ventilated and plenty of fresh air not closed tight at inght and wide open in day dayIf If a horse breaks out in perspiration he should be rubbed dry and sponged with diluted alcohol alcoholThere There should be plenty of fresh drinking water which should be given often in small quantities This is one of the most essential things in shipping horses Give plenty of drinking water The diet should consist of bran very little grain if any any plenty of good hay hayThere There is no need of knocking a horse down or throwing it off the car when suffering from a car fit as a veterinarian can furnish the shipper with medicine that will surely quiet them themOn On arrival at destination the animals should have gentle exercise A horse likes nothing better than a roll in a sand pit or straw or sawdust after a long trip Horses may have a light cathartic before shipping but drastic purgatives should be avoided before and after the journey After a long trip saline cathartics such as sodium sulphate in small doses are most beneficial suggestions do not apply to the new steel horse cars but t to equipment in which horses have Itccn shipped for a long time and arc mostly shipped In these days of car shortage and railroad uncertainty uncertaintyDIt DIt FUEDEKIOK W AS1IE Havana Cuba March 1 1JM
