SNOW AND COLD WAVE AT LOUISVILLE LOUISVILLEAVintry AVintry AVcather Halts Training Operations at Both Churchill Downs and Douglas Park LOriSVILLK Ky April I Snow flurries and a high biting cold wind which sent the tempera ¬ ture below the freezing point within a few hours put a damper upon training operations at both Churchill Downs and Douglas Park this morning What horses wei out wen only given limbering up gallops by exercise boys and jockeys clad in heavy sweaters and overcoats and by 10 oclock both tracks wen clear of thoroughbreds thoroughbredsThe The snow fell intermittently throughout the day but it did not stick because the ground was not frozen The wind dried the two tracks out fairly well lint the outlook is for more snow and colder weather in which event the tracks will freeze and be in bd order for several days yet yetFor For the third time in four days the schooling of the twityearolds had to be abandoned as none of the trainers cared to expose their charges to the elements anv longer than absolutely necessarv Assistant starter AVill Hamilton arrived from Lex ¬ ington and had a barrier up at Douglas Park but it was not needed this morning morningRacing Racing secretary AVilliam II Shelley leaves for Lexington tomorrow morning to open his office then for the coming spring meeting lie is taking with him the promises of most of the larger racing establishments here to send either all or part of their horses then to race including quite a few Kentucky Derby candidates which an entered in the Hlue Crass Stakes In addition to these sev ¬ eral of the big eastern outfits have advised him that they will ship direct to Ioxington from New York or Maryland MarylandAn An application for a riding license in Kentucky for 10 0 was received today from jockey Andy Schut finger who has been out of the saddle for SOTIH time with a broken leg Schnttinger is the contract pilot for the J AV McClelland Stable and i is inoiighi that he will come here to ride Prince Pal in the Kentucky Derby as this colt is owned partly by E F Simms who is associated with McClelland in the latters big thoroughbred hollings hollingsWilliam William Dondas whose horses raced with much success in Havana last winter got in this morning from his home in Latonia His racers are at the I itonia track where they were sent from Oriental Park lie reports that there are a large number of horses at the Milldale course most of which will be sent to Lexington in the near future futureJohn John C Ferriss arrived from Nashville Tenn where he spent several days since leaving New Orleans OrleansJockey Jockey Mack firmer eame from his Imine in CMI lerville Iowa today lie has not affiliated him ¬ self with any stable as yet for this spring but ex ¬ pects to do so in a few days as he has several offers to choose from 1 X Murphy local architect who superintended the erection of the new grandstand and other buildings at Churchill Downs has gone to Lexing ¬ ton to look after some improvements which will be made at the track there Only work that is abso ¬ lutely essential will be done between now and the opening of the Ixxington meeting but other changes are in prospect after the spring racing there ends
