DERBY HORSES WORK FAST Sterling Surprises Onlookers by Good Gallop of Mile in 144 Donnacona Makes Best Showing Showingof of All the Candidates Damask DamaskTaking Taking Things Easily loriSVILIE Ky April St Todays workouts of Kentucky Derby candidates at Churchill Downs were by far the best of the spring season to date Donnacona On AVatch Prince Pal Sterling and Damask being called on to show their mettle in gallops of one mile each The time made by these horses with the exception of Damask was faster than even their trainers expected The Downs track was in better condition than in a long while although a hit flippy and every move of the lending horses in this section was a good one AYeather conditions could not have been improved upon uponDiiunacoiia Diiunacoiia and On AVatch ran the mile together in 11 Sterling in 144 Damask in 148 and Prince Pal in 144 144Sterlings Sterlings fast gallop was the surprise of the day He now takes rank with the members of the first division of the Derby prospects He was ridden by jockey G Pyrno who weighs almost 130 pounds His performance under this impost caused much favorable comment He began in front of the grandstand accompanied by Splendor a Kentucky Oaks candidate and the pair ran the first quarter in 23 seconds The half mile was covered in 30 and the threequarters in 1115 Splendor fell far back at this juncture and Sterling ran the rest of the distance alone After finishing the mile Byrne eased the colt up and he only can ¬ tered and finished the mile and an eighth in 139 To many it appeared as though Sterling was doing his best all the way but Pyrne said that he was not and he affirmed that he could have had more speed out of him had he cared to Ile wants a horse to rim with him that will look him in the eye and make him exert himself said Byrne and after his pacemaker drops back he seems to realize it itPRINCE PRINCE PAL SHOWS SPEED SPEEDPrince Prince Pal again worked by himself and for a change had jockey John Callahau on him This rider weighs only 100 pounds The Prince Palatine colt got down to business right off the reel as he ran the first quarter of a mile in 2 and he reached the half mill post in 111 to practically a canter and he was timed for a mile and an eighth in 200r 200rThe The high early speed shown by Prince Pal gained him many new admirers AVhen he pulled up he seemed as fresh as when he started and cooled out in fine style styleConsiderable Considerable excitement was caused while Donna ¬ cona and On Watch were preparing for their workout as the former all but got away from jockey Cliff Robinson He took a notion to run the reverse way of the trck and darted out so uddenlv that Robinson was taken by surprise and ould not hold him The rider guided him to the mtside rail and managed to pull him up after a inssle which lasted for a quarter of a mile With On Watch he began in front of the stand and for the first time this season the G AV Loft Derby horses were allowed to move along at a rapid gait They ran the first quarter in 21 half mile in ilr fiveeighths in 104 threequarters in IMS eveneighths in 1 anil the mile in 11 Several horsemen timed them i shade faster They galloped out a mile and eighth ill 1 Donnacona led his stablemate throughout and made the most favorable impression as he was under restraint even while moving as fast as he did Jockey Newton Barrett shook his whip at On AVatch several times during the workout in order to keep him clo to Donnacona and this took some of the Inclination to loaf out of him He requires hard riding in his Avork Hirsch installed just outside the oft stable stableTrainer Trainer Mose Goldblatt instructed jockey Eddie Ambrose to let Damask move along at a good speed for about a half mile or so although not at
