ONE OF CALIFORNIAS PRODUCING STUDS STUDSFine Fine Band of Young Runnymede Foals Now at the Spreckels Napa Stud Farm By F L McKBXXKV McKBXXKVSAX SAX FUANCISCO Cal April 13 In order to give his Voter stallion Uunnymede the fullest opportunity to demonstrate his worth in the stud A P Spreckels is sending the great majority of his choicely bred brood mares to the court of the handsome chestnut Horsemen who have visited Mr Spreckels Napa Stock Farm in the beautiful Napa Valley recently and inspected criti ¬ cal lly the yearling sons and daughters of Uunny ¬ mede are unanimous in saying Uunnymede is des ¬ tined to take his place along with Brutus Water ¬ cress ICmiMror of Norfolk and other sires in shedding dustry hereabouts with the present revival The twelveyearold son of Voter and the Domino mare Uunning Stream is only getting into his stride as a sire his first progeny having raced a little moiv than a year ago The present band of year ¬ lings has impressed extremely favorably men who have seen all of the hundred or more yearlings on the various farms in this state stateIt It is fitting that the Xapa Stock Farm should be carrying on in such a successful manner as it connects the old golden days of the breeding in ¬ dustry hereabouts with the present revival The Spreckels ranch as the Xapa people call it was turning out winners way back in the nineties and right now holds the proud position of breeding more winners than any other place in the country with the exception of three of the mammoth es ¬ tablishments of the eastern states statesTwelve Twelve of the fifteen yearlings frisking about at their hearts content in the spacious paddocks of Mr Spreckels farm the stern business of racing being yet a thing of the distant future are Uunny niedes Tho other three are by Voorhees the sire of Madge F and other speejy ones Eight of tho Uunnymede yearlings are fillies and he has pretty well marked them with his own color seven of the eight being chestnuts All of the colts are chestnuts too except a little brown fellow dam the Dr Leggo mare Ilymlr The fillies are a re ¬ markably fine looking band of real race horse con ¬ formation and of uniform good size b me and sub ¬ stance The colts also show all the graceful lines op thcl daddy Of the thirty mares now on the farm twentyfive were bred this year to Uunnymede The Wonderful producer Salvatrix by Salvation Installatrix by Brutus was mated with Voorhees Salvatrix is the dam of Madge F llarhard Venetia Savilla and other good winners and has made a record similar to that of Ceorgia VI the dam of a dozen winners Georgia VI was a daughter of the late Senator Stanfords sire Flambeau and was for years one of the breeding jewels at Xapa Stock Farm Among her daughters is Darunia the dam of U F Carmans good winner Carmandale Another daugh ¬ ter Ccorgia Oirl by Solitaire II is the dam of wellknown horses Some years back when Ceorgia VI was living there were eighty marcs on the farm OI 1 age took quite a number and then last fall a strange disease was fatal to fifteen fifteenMr Mr Spreckels is giving plenty of opportunities to daughters of Solitaire and rightly so it seems as Solitaire comes from a line of sires famous for its brood mare strain He was a son of Ayrshire and his grandsire Hampton and his greatgrandsire I Iord ord Illfden are equally noted for siring brood mares Voorhees from the Flambeau mare Carnation II carries along the male line of Solitaire at the farm farmThere There are some Star Shoot mares at Xapa Stock Farm that both Mr Spreckels and Walter de Brette ville superintendent of the stud establishment hold in much favor Uunnymede is an especially happy nick for the daughters of Star Shoot as his second dam Dancing Water is by Isonomy the grandsin of Star Shoot ShootDr Dr Leggo by Puryear I Sevens one of the most popular horses that ever looked through a bridle in California is not represented among the yearlings but some of the foals have him as a sire Dr Leggo is as playful as a kitten for all of his eighteen years His coal has changed since retirement to the stud from a medium bright bay to a deep brownish tinge tingeThe The
