GAVE HIM THE BEST OF THE START vi in n 11 i7wing story on Mars Cassidy when he was officiating at the barrier at Juarez several winters ago agoWe We were spending a pleasant evening in a cheerful place of call over in El Paso said Clancy We were interrupted by a lanky Okla ¬ homa person who had been racing in the bushes and had a few horses at Juarez He came up and introduced himself to Cassidy and when he was made more or less welcome and had bought a round he remarked that he was starting a mare in a cer ¬ tain race on the following day and suggested that everything being all right among friends that Cassidy might see that his mare got away from the post next day Sure said Cassidy who was fcelinsr plenty cheerful at the time and then he forgot all about it However it happened hat when the start was made next day the mare belonging to the Oklahoma person did get away from the post wing ¬ ing She beat the barrier and led into the stretch by a dozen lengths She was qtiittiir at the end however and in a nose nnd nose finish the judges placed her second1 Xeirlier Cassidy nor I had thought anything of the conversation of the night before until once more we ran across the Okla ¬ homa man th l night Cassidv you are a right guy he told Mars Hint night You gave me all the best of the start and if Id had them judges fixed like I had you Id have got away wjtl it
