PLUCKY ONTARIO JOCKEY CLUB ACTION Will Hold Its Spring Meeting Despite the Threat ¬ ened Exorbitant Daily Tax TOKOXTO Out April 23 At a meeting of the board of tin Ontario Jockey Club held this day the following statement was issued by the directors directorsWhen When racing ceased in August 1917 the jockey clubs were assured by the government at Ottawa that after the war it would be automatically al ¬ lowed to continue Kelylng upon this statement the Ontario Jockey Club kept up its plant paid its taxes and ran the Kings Plate in the years 191S and 1919 with the object of encouraging in a measure breeders and owners to continue breeding and training thoroughbred horses horsesWith With the war ended they procoded to prepare for their spring meeting this year Such prepara ¬ tions require several months of work Contracts have been let and engagements entered into the conditions of stakes to close on May 5 next have already been distributed the entire program of races being in print Owners of horses have gone to great expense in keeping up their stables from year to year and in training and preparing their horses this spring for our coming meeting Evi ¬ dence of this is the list of nominations to the Kings Plate which closed on March 15 the entry being the largest in the history of the Ontario Jockey Club and the horses at present stable at Woodbine Park being greatly in excess of previous years yearsThe The Dominion and Provincial governments knew what our plans were and the expense that breeders and owners and this jockey club were incurring but gave no intimation that racing would be stopped or interfered with in such a way as to make it impossible to continue racing racingIf If a tax such as indicated in the provincial treasurers budget speeh is imposed breeders owners the public and the jockey clubs are being unfairly treated but notwithstanding this it is the intention of the Ontario Jockey Club to keep faith with these owners and breeders of thorough ¬ bred horses and the public and carry out theii program as announced for this spring meeting
