AMERICAS RECENT ACQUISITION SOME PARTICULARS OF PRINCE PALATINES GREA FEATS WHILE ENGAGED IN RACING AND REASONS WHY HE SHOULD ATTAIN HIGH FAME AS A SIRE IN THIS COUNTRY During the course of Mondays racing in Lexington news of far reaching importance came to hand in that the Pourbon County breeder Mr K F Sinims had made the purchase in France of that grand race horse and now successful sire Prince Palatine which of course was a source of much jubilation for all those in any way interested in the thoroughbred horse as bred in this country Prince Palatines ac ¬ quisition is of more than ordinary moment not only because of his excellence as a race horse and his success as a sire but that also he is bred to improve the quality of the bloodstock of the entire country countryItecently Itecently Prince Palatine has been in service in France as the property of the Due Decazes who pur chasett him from Mr J It Joel in tin summer of 1U7 Prince Palatine was foaled in PIOS and was bred by Col Hall Walker and raced with much success in his four years on the turf in the colors of Mr T Pilkington for whom the bay son of Persimmon won as a youngster three races his first success com ¬ ing about in the running of the Itelfont Plate at Kempton Park in August and next came a victory in the Dinnington Castle Nursery at Newbury to be followed by a victory in the Ci000 Imperial Produce Stakes at Kempton Park beating Praxted aiid Meleager In his last race of that year Prince Palatine finished unplaced to King William and Phryxus for the Dewhursf Plate at Newmarket In all Prince Palatine cannot be said to have shown any exceptional merit in his juvenile days but as is the case with so many of the St Simon tribe the bay ripened slowly and improved as he grew older As a three yearold Prince Palatine won but two races and was once again a trifle slow in coming to hand being beaten on his first attempt that year by Pannockburn for the Fiftythird Itiennial Stakes at Ascot in June Pulled out again during the Second July Meeting at Newmarket Prince Palatine again went down to defeat this time by Mushroom in the running of the Midsummer Stakes but now Prince Palatine be ¬ gins to improve and scored a ready neck victory over Phryxus in the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood and followed this up by a sensational St Leger victory in which race on his coining into view the others wrt liiigiit making their appearanretlrat sYmie Spectators jiidged them all to have iHcnTeft TiTthe post Stedfast beat him for the mile and a quarter Kingsclere Stakes at Kempton Park which brought his threeyearold racing career to a close As a fouryearold Prince Palatine was absolutely at his best though he again led oft with a loser but won in that year four splendid races In the running of the Fpson Coronation Cup hfs oldtime antagonist Stedfast again proved his master but the Persimmon colt next won with all ease the Ascot Gold Cup from the Frenchman Itasse Pointe and Jtill and Coo Now conies my personal acquaintance with Prince Palatine and the scene of the introduction the July Course at Newmarket Prince Palatine as I know him is a squarejawed truemade horse one which carries a good flag no lumber about him in fact a real good hard wearandtear stamp of a horse one on which reliance can be placed The rawboned bay gelding Lance Chest was a bit too much for him in tht running of the Princess of Wales Stakes however but this race did him a world of good and never shall I forget that sunny Sandown afternoon the day of the Kclipse Stakes when the horse of my fancy so gallantly and inexorably vanquished his whilom conqueror the winner of twelve straight races Stedfast in the running of the one and onequarter miles KtHpse Stakes Judged on this performance alone I have no hesitation in writing down Prince Palatine the best horse I ever saw race and do not expect soon to look upon his like again Certainly the ring took liberties with him laying as good as six to one for they thought the distance too short for the stouthearted son of Persimmon but he would not be denied though it took his best to do it and it was only in the last stride that he proved the victor in the most memorable stretch duel 1 have ever witnessed The Doncaster Cup was later won by an easy ten lengths and the battle again renewed with Stedfast in the running of the one and three quarter miles Jockey Club Stakes Still the ring was not convinced and again Stedfast was favorite and a false one he proved to be for Prince Palatine aided by the increase in distance even though he was conceding a matter of thirteen pounds again beat the chestnut and this time the verdict was in ¬ creased to a comfortable half length Prior to his being sent into winter quarters Prince Palatine had an unsuccessful race against Aleppo in the Jockey Club Cup Two victories and one defeat is the sum ¬ mary of Prince Palatines racing as a fiveyearold This year the colt begali by winning the Coronation Cup at Kpsom and next came a second win of the Ascot Gold Cup thus emulating the feats of The White Knight anil Isonomy Stedfast in this race was once again forced to play second fiddle witli the Jockey Club Cup winner third Much to the regret of all true horsemen Tracery from which the greatest danger threatened was brought down by a spectator during the running of the race and the question of suprem ¬ acy was never definitely settled Prince Palatine went oft his form after this as witness his running unplaced behind the giant Catmint in the Goodwood Cup Just about this time the horse was sold to Mr J 11 Joel by whom he was in the summer of PH7 passed on to the French breeder the Due Decazes DecazesThe The first of the progeny of Prince Palatine appeared on the turf in 11S and two of them Iron Hand and Splendid Spur wen returned winners Last year Prince Palatine was much in evidence as a sire in that his son the as yet unbeaten Prince Galahad won the two races in which he took part the Cliesliani Stakes Ascot and the Dewhurst Plate Newmarket In all Prince Palatine had out last year an even dozen winners for besides the abovementioned Prince Galahad he is the sin of the losshoroiigh and Chesterfield Stakes winner He Goes Firework and seven other winning youngsters Prince Palatine is also the sin of winners on this side in War Paint and the twoyearolds Prince Pal
