NEW 10000 STEEPLECHASE STAKE Will Bo Offered by the Westchester Racing As ciation to Be Run in the Fall NEW YORK N Y Juito 0 Realizing that something is needed in the way of encouragement to tlioso who race through the field the Westches ¬ ter Racing Association has offered through Its president Major August Belmont to inaugurate a stake of i value of 10000 10000Details Details of the event have not been arranged as yet biUjtliit the race is a certainty and may be j feature of the autumn program at Belmont Park Should be good news to all those who regard steeple clinsing as the most fascinating and at the same time useful of the tests for the thoroughbred Cross ¬ country racing in the Inited States was at one time the last use to which the unsound thoroughbred was put Happily this practice has almost dis ¬ appeared and the jumpers of today are in the main horses that are as sound as it is possible to secure them Most of the crosscountry perform ¬ ers now get iheir education at three and not later than four years of age This is as it should be Jumping horses should Jx sound and they should in particular have good hocks Unsound jumpers are a menace to life and limb limbThe The fact that a good jumper can now win almost as much as i good flat racer should stimulate the jumping sport materially Horsemen will be en ¬ couraged to secure better material and there should be a host of recruits to the ranks of owners as a result of the policy of the Westchester Racing Association AssociationThe The vigilance of the Steeplechase Association this spring is to bi commended and if the policy now being pursued Is continued the sinister influence so long a bane to the sport will be eliminated The interest now shiwn by Messrs Higginsou Bull Page Von Stade and other members of that organi ¬ zation is having Its effect
