DEAD HEAT IN QUICKSTEP Latonias Valuable Sprint Race Divided Between Two Judges Unable to Separate Sewell SewellCombs Combs and Miss Jemima i iMotor Motor Cop Third BY J L DEMPRET DEMPRETLATONIA LATONIA Ky June 10 The eighth running of the Quickstep Stakes this afternoon brought about many thrills for the huge concourse which viewed the grueling duel waged between Sewell Combs and Miss Jemima and the verdict fo the plac ¬ ing judges made it a dead heat the pair coming to the finish on such even terms that the officials were unable to distinguish any margin of difference First and second money was divided between the pair each taking down 337250 net as its portion Ten started in the race with Motor Cop brought here especially to run in the event enjoying de ¬ cided favoritism but the speedy Miss Jemima was not lacking for friends she carrying the hopes of most of the racegoers here American Ace also found support and the Gallaher brothers made no secret of their belief in Sewell Combs ability to take the stake stakeMotor Motor Cop started out as if he would make a runaway of it for he raced into a good lead at the outset with Busy Signal and Miss Jemima in nearest pursuit but Busy Signal gave up the cjiase on the stretch turn and Miss Jemimas chances ap ¬ peared none too good to overhaul the leader at this time Motor Cop however shot his bolt In the next eiKlith andMisJeniima raced by hlny only to Tie Instantly challenged by the fast cominff Sewell Combs which had closed a big gap The pair fought it out stubbornly neither giving an inch and continued on even strides nntil passing the finish Flags refused to join with the others at the start and was left Jockey F Hunt wai BO incensed with his action that he belabored him over the head with his whip for which he was sus ¬ pended for five days Gallaher Bros colors also figured extensively in the secondary feature which was taken by Rvgnlo after she had led for the entire way Be Frank Outstaying Leochares for second place Unusual incidents were numerous in connection with todays racing and began when Last Coin an overwhelming favorite in the opening dash broke down while lie was in the lead It was tho first defeat that had been registered for him during his racing career He is probably done for rac ¬ ing in the future and will continue doing stud service at the Highland Stock Farm FarmAnother Another blow for the talent came in the second race when E R Bradleys highly rated Beljeve Idle Hour making her initial start was almost left at the post and then only suffered defeat by a neck the winner turning up in Anne Eliza ¬ beth a sister to the good colt Freecutter FreecutterCaptain Captain Rces a supposed good thing was beaten by a small margin in the third race and in the fourth another jolt was banned the backers when Yellow Blossom a heavily backed one unseated her rider as a result of stumbling She hurdled the fence before she could be caught but did no damage to herself and Stone the rider escaped injury by his fall The concluding race went to Bradloys Choice which easily led for the entire way wayAn An immense attendance was again on hand to view the interesting sport The track was at its best and fast time the rule in most of the dashes particularly where the better grade of horses met metLast Last Coin registered his first defeat this after ¬ noon and it is doubtful if he would have suc ¬ cumbed but for falling lame after going a half mile and while still in the lead His return to the stand was made with difficulty The son of Ultimus Half Crown has been serving several years in the Highland Stock Farm Stud owned by J B Respess and M C Goodwin the prom ¬ ising youngster owned by John Hnchnielster is sired by Last Coin
