MORE HEAVY TRACK RAGING Latonia Course Still in Bad Con ¬ dition but Ready to Improve Lorraine Has a Close Call in De ¬ feating Make Up Fern Handley Again LATONIA Ky June 22 Mud racing was again the order here and the track this afternoon was really a trying one that proved the undoing of all but the most sturdy built type of racer Im ¬ proved weather however contributed extensively toward good sport and it was also largely re ¬ sponsible for bringing out the big crowd that wit iieswd the racing racingThe The feature was the 2200 mile and n sixteenth dash and while withdrawals left only three start starts s considerable interest was manifested in the performances of Truly Rural and Lorraine The latter won but it was Make Up that furnished the contention and the Camden filly did not have much to spare Her margin of victory was n nose and with a few strides farther to go Make Up would have been the victor Truly Rural showea the most early speed and made a fast pace but tired in the stretch due in a measure to the fact that she was guided close to the inner rail for the entire race where the going was the stiffest stiffestThe The threequarters dash for fillies brought to the post a good band of sprinters and it resulted in an easy victory for Fern Handley which beat Jane Pennybakcr and Lady Luxury The going i xi tJjytto Fejn Handley s vay of running judshe flashed into the lead when her rider called on her and in the stretch drew away as if the others were at a standstill standstillR R F Carmans colors scored the initial victory of the season here when his Ace of Aces toot the lead at the start of the first race and showed the others the way home Louis A under hard riding outstayed Flying Welshman for second place Clintoiiville the favorite here ran a dull race and Friz wheeled at the start and unseated his rider riderSold Sold Digger furnished an upset in the second race by winning in runaway style from Sir Thomas Kean and Creenland The latter was an outstand ¬ ing favorite but raced as if he was handicapped by the rough and wet going goingAlex Alex Jr and Jack Reeves furnished an exciting finish in the third race with Alex Jr getting tlie verdict by a half length Jack Reeves was the favored one here hereJulia Julia N backed extensively was the first favor ¬ ite to score and with a better beginning by Pep ¬ pery Polly it is more than probable she would have been the victress for she was pressing Julia N closely at the end endEdward Edward W Sinuns was among the visitors this afternoon stopping off en route to his Xalapa Farm near Paris Ky He was unaware when his2CO 000 Prince Palatine would be able to be shipped from France where he is at present The un ¬ certainty of his time of arrival in this country is due to the hoof and mouth disease embargo embargoThe The three horses brought here by Cal Shilling for J K L Ross to start in several stakes departed for New York this morning morningEdward Edward B McLeans The Porter which is in ¬ tended to start in the Brooklyn Handicap was shipped this morning accompanied by Jimmy Trig ¬ ger the noted mule capable of covering a quar ¬ ter of a mile in better than 24 seconds and The Porters boon companion Jockey OBrien and trainer John F Schorr went with the consignment The Porter will be shipped back here Saturday SaturdayStake Stake blanks to the four 5003 stakes races to be run at the Kenihvorth track near Windsor during July 222 were distributed to owners here this morning The stakes close July 1 and are com ¬ ing in for cicnsiderable attention Jockey E Martin was granted a license by the Kentucky State Racing Commission this afternoon
