GENERAL STUD BOOK ATTACKED AGAIN Australian Writer Says Credit of Great Winners to Family Four Belongs to Family Eleven BY F L McKENNEY McKENNEYOur Our own Man o War yet may break into tlio closely guarded pages of the English Stud Hook Up to tlie present the authorities across the water have held the great son of Fair Play and Mahubah to be ineligible to the English breeders hcly of holies by reason of the taint on the female side of the pedigree of his great grandsire Spendthrift Lately however astute students of the thorough ¬ bred in British countries bave been partially at least pulling down the Stud Book structure The Stud Book is not perfect it has been brought to light and there is no telling where the work of destructive criticism will end And in it all Man o War may come out triumphant triumphantThe The chief flaw so far pointed out is the pub ¬ lished ancestry of the Herod marc Expectation tenth dam of Man o War I truce Lowes familips are jumbled up a bit by the latest discovery The situation is set forth in the Melbourne publication The Australian in the issue of May 29 as fol ¬ lows A correspondent lias raised the question as to the correct IJruce Lowe family number of Trafalgar and all horses descended from the Herod mare Ex ¬ pectation In the earlier editions of the English Stud Book Expectation was described as being by Herod from a mare by Skim from a mare by Janus from Spinster by Crab from the Widdrington mare by Partner and therefore descended from tlie Laytcn Ilarli mare the fountain head of the No 4 family However in the fifth edition of volume 1 of the General Stud Book the compilers inserted a footnote as follows Mr Yemens own stud book gives this Skim mare dam of Expectation and Telemacltus as out of Yciing Country Wench by Janus from a mare by Crab and Telcmachus was entered and advertised as dam by Bkim JanusCrab which is rijht of both pedigrees pedigreesYoung Young Country Wcueli was descended from the Sedhury Royal mare which founded the No 11 family The footnote quoted also appears in the Herman Goos tables It is difficult to understand why the compiler of the Stud Hook with that evi ¬ dence before him did not correct the breeding of the Skim mare in the Stud Hook Of course it would have necessitated the correction of hundreds of other pedigrees in subsequent volumes ami as the pedigree was incorrectly given in the previous four editions of the first volume of the Stud Book he evidently decided it would be better to allow matters to stand where they were Had the cor ¬ rection been made it would have resulted in the Xo 4 and the No II families changing places placesFifteen Fifteen of the classic winners descended from Expectation should really be credited to the Xo 11 family instead of to the Xo 4 That done the position at the families is transposed Classic winners descended from Expectation Snelnda Thor manby Wcnlock Kisber Uona Yisto Apology and Common CommonMoved Moved over from the Xo 4 family where it lias been supposed Man o1 War belonged to Xo 11 the American champion acquires as relatives St Simon and other illustrious horses Australian sire of Spendthrift is a Xo 11 horse as are Orme Love Wisely Rightaway and Marvelous
