ENGLANDS LEADING SIRE Polymelus Spearmint The Te trarch Captivation Tracery Honey Bees Promising Start Sceptres Days as a Pro ¬ ducer Seem to Be Over BY E E COUSSELL COUSSELLLONDON LONDON England June 18 So far this yeai thoro has lpon seven winners by Polymelus The include at least two good ones in Cinna which is probably our best threeyearold filly and Polu metis the brother to Coreyra He may be up U classic form later in the year The other winners by Polymelus are Silvern which beat Tetratema al Newbury Ielops Paladin Powerful and the two yearold Napolyon NapolyonSpearmint Spearmint is also responsible for seven winners so far this year Spion Kop is his best There is also Lord Archer and Eagle Hawk the twoyear old half brother to The Panther Spearmints otlici successful offspring are Verbena Cold Steel Min ¬ strel and Mr Eustace On the whole they do not compare with the winners credited to Polymelus PolymelusThe The Tetrarcli is responsible for five winners sc far Tetratema stands out by himself There is also his brother Arch Gift as well as Royal Alarm sold for 8000 as a yearling and Caligula n goodlooking gray brother to the Irish Oaks win ¬ ner Snow Maiden He fetched 15500 as a year ¬ ling The Tetrarchs only successful youngster so far is Precious He is a brown colt dam Zoara Sir Hugo CnnliffeOwen paid 20000 for him al the Newmarket July sales in 1919 1919Captivation Captivation by Cyllene is having a good year and so far in addition to the Newbury Cup winner Grandeourt is responsible for four twoyearold winners They include Oxendou a winner of three races and Belsizc the best twoyearold to date in Ireland The last named from Chancery is a half sister by Eager to Challacombe the winner of the St Leger in 1905 This reminds me that Lord Derby lias recently bought in France from the Due Decazes a good mare named Helen Maria by William the Third Lady Chancellor She has I believe been bred to Negofol sire of Hourless HourlessSUCCESS SUCCESS OF HONEY BEE AN OBSCURE SIEE SIEEOrby Orby has had three winners namely the speedy Parella which cost 50000 last year when she was sold privately Orbys Pride and Lady Orb Junior has come to the fore with three wjnning twoyear olds in Xoldenia Devoir and Helenora filly Tracery has two juveniles so far but they arc really good ones in Ste Claire II filly and Mon ¬ arch archMonarch Monarch gave an impressive performance in the Spring Stakes He carried his penalty gamely and when challenged by Lockroi coming up the hill drew away to win by two lengths The on of Tracery is not a big one but is a rare good looker Some critics object his tail is put on badly Rock roi was making his first start anil surprised his owner and trainer by running so well as he had been performing indifferently in his home gallops He is the 32000 son of Prince Palatine and Rock Garden GardenAn An obscure young sire to make a show is Honey Bee which has sired the twoyearold winners Broadford Bumble Bee and Wild Honey He is by Tredennis April Flower by Florizel II from a halfsister to St Serf and Atalauta the dam of Ayrshire Honey Bee is in the stud in Meath Ireland at a fee of 25 He won his last race as a fiveyearold at Pheonis Park in 1915 It was run over fiveeighths mile and he won by one and a half lengths with 125 pounds beating eighteen others Honey Bee was afterward sold for 425 Obviously on what his stock has done to date Honey Bee was ridiculously cheap Both Broadford and Wild Honey were bred by Pat Rogers who owns Hoiiey Bee He is a wellbred horse and as he lias got these winners from poor class mares it is apparent that he is a promising proposition propositionHe He may be another Tredennis The latter how over could not win a race He cost the late Mr Lowry 3750 yet five or six years later on what his offspring had done he refused 100000 for him I note in the 1919 official list of foalings there are brothers to Broadford and Wild Honey Only nine mares were bred to Honey Bee in 191S and of these three were barren barrenReferring Referring to the Foal List of 1919 the year previous thirtyfive mares were bred to Tracery which sired nineteen living foals and had twelve barren mares Eos the Cambridgeshire winner which was sold at the last December sales for 55 000 to Sir Gilbert Greenall has a chestnut filly on which has been bestowed the name of Rorodaktylos Signorinetta the Derby and Oaks winner also bred a chestnut filly to Tracery in 1919 Hamoaze the dam of Ruchan has a bay yearling colt Tamar by Tracery He of course belongs to Lord Astor AstorSCEPTRES SCEPTRES PRODUCING DAYS MAY BE OVER OVERPolymelus Polymelus did not have such a heavy season and from the twentynine English mares mated with him he got twenty foals of which three died Included in the list is a sister to Pommern The latter himself was uncertain when he first went to the stud but the official figures show that there need now be little doubt as to his virility He got twentyone living foals from thirtytwo mares maresSceptre Sceptre was on Sunstars list in 1918 but proved barren last year It is to be feared that her breeding days are over It is noteworthy how ¬ ever that no fewer than four daughters of Sceptre all visited Sunstar in 1918 and all four had foals Maid of the Mist had a bay filly Miss Wise which is a sister to Sunny Jane winner of the New Oaks at Newmarket in 1917 when she de ¬ feated Diadem Queen Carbine foaled a bay filly since named The Meteorite I recently saw that filly now owned by Lord Wilton who gave 30000 for Queen Carbine in foal to Sunstar This is a promising well made filly Curia dam of Em ¬ bassy bred a chestnut colt named Sun Cure and Sceptres Daughter bred a chestnut filly by Sun star Sir E Hultons Fifinella the winner of the New Derby and the New Oaks at Newmarket in 1910 also bred a chestnut filly Fifine to Sun star in 1919 Rock Garden the dam of Rockroi produced a brown filly Rockroi two years was sold for 3250Q as a yearling A few mouths later Martin Gurry privately sold Rock Garden with her Sunstar foal to the Sledmere Stud for 20000
