year for 30000 He is by Bachelors Double His dam Sourabaya is a half sister by Spendthrift to Orpheus The next dam Sirenia is sister to the dam of Spion Kon KonThe The Ascot Stakes is a handicap run over two miles and worth nearly 10000 Ilnnpy Man car riedtoy weight 129 pounds which is the highest weight ever carried to victory in the race witli a history of seventy years There were sixteen run ¬ ners Front Line and Chat Tor were confidently j It wniT an interesting race and at the distance Front Line was leading Happy Man then came out with a fine burst of speed and won by a half length lengthThere There was a touch of romance in his victory His owner and several interested friends went straight from the Law Courts in London to see tho horse win at Ascot We had spent all the Monday in the court Happy Man was put on offer at 17500 to go to India His owner alleged the wouldbe buyer was an unreasonably long time in arranging veterinary examination and complet ¬ ing the business He therefore withdrew the horse Trade customs were brought into the case Thy Indian buyer however claimed the horse or dam ¬ ages After the case had opened Mr Hardy agreed to give 5000 damages and pay costs lie retaining his horse In light of what happened three hours later this was a nice termination Happy Mans owner had 1500 on his horse at 10 to 1 and friends in the case had good wins Happy Man as a twoyearold could have been bought for 1000 On his present form he looks worth 35000 to 50000 50000GOOD GOOD GRAY WINS COVENTRY COVENTRYLast Last year the gray Sarchedon won the Ascot Coventry Stakes and this year another gray tri limpheil Milesius was literally mobbed in the paddock He made the running and won easily by two lengths from Mr Joels Thunderer which was a neck in front of Monarch Milesius thus recom ¬ pensed for the Newbury fiasco The winner is a particularly good looking colt a much finer colt than was The Tetrarch at his age Some objected to his wide action when galloping and doubt if he will be a stayer As mentioned his dam Nicola is a half sister to The Tetrarch She died the week before Ascot A sister to Milesius was sent to the United States After being highly tried she met witli a fatal accident Mr Kennedy vas overwhelmed with offers to buy his fine colt He rpfiused to put him on price as lie wishes him to succeed Roi Hcrode HcrodeOf Of course every one jumped to the conclusion that Milesins is the best colt ever seen out I have the best authority for stating that at present at home he is not the equal of Lcighton by Hoi Herode Queen of the Earth by Flying Fox from the Oaks winner Lonely LonelyA A free galloping daughter of the famous Pretty Polly ran in the Coventry She is named Polly Flinders md was close up at the finish Doubtless she will be heard of later in the season seasonWednesday Wednesday at Ascot was a regular Tetrarch Day Three if the chief events were Avon by his offspring Orby equaled this feat last year when nir Gr11 Cup Day he sent out Diadem Grand Pa ¬ rade and Orpheus The Chesham Stakes brought out some good looking youngsters A great deal of interest was taken in Syrian Prince the gray halfbrother to Omar Khayyam He was reported backward and I gathered had not thriven on hi work He looked light in the flanks As is known he was one of the best looking youngsters at Doncaster when he was sold for 40000 He is a dark gray and has the real Tetrarch spots After going half way he lay third but quickly improved his position and won handily from the gray filly Chloe by Sunstar Marthe a daughter of Tagale The form of course was not the best shown at the meeting Sirrah the halfbrother to Fininella and Shilling is a big fine colt He was unplaced and probably requires time timeCALIGULA CALIGULA BY THE TETRARCH STAYS STAYSThe The next Tetrarch to score was Lord Wiltons handsome colt Caliguln which beat Abbots Trace Orpheus and Polnmetis in the Ascot Derby Stakes of 7750 This is the first big race his young owner has won The race was run over one and onehalf miles and the time was 230 Incidentally those who persistently stale The Tetrarch cannot sire a stayer had something to explain explainAfter After the Sold Cup the most interesting race was the classic New Stakes in which many Derby winners have made their debut Naturally dark ones were strongly supported in preference to public form There were seventeen runners Many of them made good impressions but Allen Vreck seemed a really highclass colt and ran like one He came with a big reputation from Newmarket and started favorite at 5 to 2 He is a well grown chestnut colt with beautiful quality and character He raced like a highclass colt for lie won in convincing fashion by four lengths A colt which can do that in the New Stakes may well be something out of the common He is owned Continued on second page INCIDENTS AT ROYAL ASCOT Continued from first pace by Sir James Buchanan and of course trained by Gilpin so will be given every opportunity to dis ¬ tinguish himself still further He is by Sunstar Joe de Vivre a fast mare by Gallinule from Lu Joe by Ayrshire AyrshireBlack Black Gauntlet a big colt standing over seven ¬ teen
