BUCHANS ECLIPSE STAKES VICTORY The thirtysecond running of the Eclipse Stakes took place at Sanddwn Park near London Friday afternoon Before the great war this race was one of Englands ten thousand pounders it and tins Jockey Cub Stakes at Newmarket each being of the nominal gross valite of 50 CO Its running was in term it ted while the war was in irogress Sandowi 1ark being devoted to military iises Last year the race was resumed but its value was cut down by onehalf it now being a 5000 sov ¬ ereigns race but its old distance of a mile and a quarter was retained On the occasion of its re ¬ newal last year it was won by Major W Astors threeyearold bay colt Ruplian by Sunsfar Ham caze by Torpphit Two other threeyearold Sir A Blacks Cygnus and Mr J Buchanans Splendid Spur finished second and third respectively This year the same splendid young horse won it again a remarkable feat even for the best stayer of his age in England and 0116 only once paralleled when Orme won the samp race in successive years in 1892 and 1893 Buchaii it will be remembered finished first in the Ascot Gold Cup of this year but was disqualified In England no one questions his being a lushclass race horse a great weight carrier and a great stayer
