PRINCE OF WALES WAYS IN AUSTRALIA BY F L McKEXXEY McKEXXEYSAX SAX FRAXCISCO Cal Aug 12 The people of Australia have learned a good deal about the fan ¬ cies of the Prince of Wnles during that young mans visit in the Antipodes in the hist few months according to passengers arriving here on the Oceanic liner Ventura For one thing they have found out he is a horseman through and through whether it comes to throwing a leg on a higli struug racer or putting a modest wager on his se ¬ lection on a big racing day Thousands of his loyal subjects went wild over him at Sydney Xew South Wales where he spent several days Every daysEvery morning ho was In Sydney he went horse ¬ back riding at the Randwick race course On his twentysixth birthday ho was at the track a little after 10 oclock in the morning and without cere ¬ mony mounted a fine chestnut thoroughbred of the hunter type After a gallop through the field on the large horse he shifted over to a twoyear old covering threeeighths in 38ft A few min ¬ utes later on an older horse he landed his mount a winner by inches in the tightest kind of a fin ¬ ish in an impromptu race He had just as much fun only in a different way in the afternoon at the races arranged in his honor While the immense crowd pressed close to the directors box the prince asked some ques ¬ tions of the chairman of t reception committee about the rightbunded running that is the rule on Sydney race courses With the puzzle of running the wrong way made clear to him the royal visitor dipped in true racegoing fashion into a doi e book in an effort to pick a winner or two Before and after looking into the record of past performances he took a look at the horses through liis glasses He made a numlKr of wages and as Galtee Maid one of bis selections won at the lucra ¬ tive odds of KID to 3 so is prtsuuied to have had a profitable day
