LATONIAS CHAMPIONSHIP Richest Race Seems Prey to the East Again Churchill Downs Awarded the Wests Most Valuable Two Year Old Race LOUISVILLE Ky August 3 Forty five high class thoroughbred sires some of them foreign bred are represented by tlio sixtytliree remaining eli gibles to tlie rich Latonia Championship Stakes which will have its second running at the Covingtnn course next October Celt leads the list five of his progeny having been kept in the bis race while Whisk Itrooin II Ballot and Von Tromp are next in order with three each Those with two apiece are King James Helmet His Majesty Uncle Tracery Sain JitGee and Broomstick BroomstickThis This stake means a lot to the thoroughbred breeder of America not only because of the fact that they are remembered in a financial way by the Kentucky Jockey Club but owing to the pres ¬ tige which a stallion gains by siring the winner of Mich an important event Last year this honor fell to Pair Play the sire of Had Hatter but this jear lie will have representative it it For some reason or another only a few of the get of Fair Play were nominated to it and all were withdrawn at various times before the final payment to keep them eligible fell due last July 1 1Practically Practically all of the leading candidates for the valuablflshikeJnJce5tiiyoivned lir Jheir original nonHnato ofTJroei rs5 rs5ioT ioT nnin are WildaTf John 1 Grier Upset Damask Amaze and Levia ¬ than in the Harry Payne Whitney stable On Watch which was named for the stake by G W Loft and bred by the Wickliffe Stud Cleopatra nominated by W It Coe who still owns her Best Pal and Brotherly Love nominated and bred by E R Bradley The Leopard Ace of Trumps and The Pirate bred entered and owned by Edward Cebrian Bersagliere and Ardito from Giffqrd CoehranV breeding establishment at Mt Kiseo X Y and Make Up which was bred by J I Respess and is still his property 1000 TO THE KOMINATOE KOMINATOEIn In an effort to further stimulate interest in the Latonia Championship Stakes among the breeders the Kentucky Jockey Club donates 1000 to the nominator of the winning horse 500 to the person who enters the horse which finishes second 300 to the third and 200 to the fourth In addition to this the owner of the winner receives a handsome trophy valued at 1000 1000The The conditions of the big stake were changed for this year in compliance with a request from many of the leading breeders and instead of having to pay to declare a horse out before a certain time payments had to he made only on those left in Another change was in the increase of the starting fee from 250 to 300 300Most Most of the leading eligibles for the rich race are now at Saratoga and they will have numerous opportunities of demonstrating their real worth at the Spa meeting which runs through the month of August There is no longdistance stake on the Saratoga roster but what has a few of the Latonia Championship eligibles in it and quite a number from the West are shipped there to try conclusions with their eastern rivals on their own stamping ground groundKenttickians Kenttickians are deeply interested in the perform ¬ ances of On Watch G W Lofts threeyearold son of Colin Ilubia Granda in the East because of his great race in the recent Kentucky Derby in which he finished third There are many racing enthusiasts in the Blue Grass State who are of the opinion that only lack of condition defeated the Loft colt in the Derby and they are confident that he will redeem himself in the Latonia Champion ¬ ship Stakes if he trains on like he is doing now His trip to Lexington in the early spring brought about his undoing as he caught cold there and was coughing for several days This resulted in his missing a workout or two just when he needed them most His race in the Derby was little short of phenomenal as lie was far back in the ruck in the rush down the backstretch and he closed an immense gap in the final quarter of a mile mileWEST WEST HAS SLIM CHANCE CHANCEUnless Unless the unexpected should happen during the Saratoga meeting the chief part that the West will play in the decision of the big stake will be to furnish the track for it to be run over There are no western oligibles left in it that on form compare favorably witli the most prominent three yearolds in the East and this was thoroughly demonstrated in the rich stakes run during the re ¬ cent Kentucky meetings With the exception of the Latonia Oaks in which Busy Signal beat Cleopatra in the fastest mile and onequarter ever run over a Kentucky race track the eastern three yearolds cleaned up in stakes for this age ex ¬ clusively clusivelyThe The Kentucky Jockey Club will cater to the two yearolds more extensively than ever before at the coming autumn season witn the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes Queen City Handicap and Breeders Fu ¬ turity The firstnamed is a new race and it will bo worth in the vicinity of 30000 Of the 384 horses nominated for this race 11 are still eligible and the list includes the best shown to date both in the East and West This stake will be run at Churchill POWIIS and the winner of it will stand an excel ¬ lent chance to go into winter quarters the cham ¬ pion money winner of the year in the twoyeaiv old division I IEntries Entries to this stake closed on July 1 1919 and the easterners were not a bit backward about nom ¬ inating their best prospects for it with the result that the leading twoyearolds racing in that section are in line to confst for the rich prize Among them are Inchcape for which S C Hildreth recently paid a reported price of 150000 Ten Lee Smoke Screen Star Voter winner of the Cincin ¬ nati Trophy at Latonia last spring Intrigante Leonardo II Serapis Eternity Touch Me Not Tryst cr BriKJin Spun and Prudery There are many others yet to show their best form and of which tuucu IB expected during the Saratoga meeting The Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes will bo over the mile route and coming as it does so late in tne year it should prove a fitting test of tin abil ¬ ity of the twoyearolds both as to speed and stamina The breeders likewise will profit by this race financially as the original nominator of the first horse will receive 501 the second S2 and the third 100 The racing association will add 10000 to this stake but the entrance fees two payments to keep horses eligible and starting fee of 250 will bring its value to about twice that sum sumThe The Breeders Futurity will be run at Lexington where it has been the chief stake at the autumn meetings for some years past Fiftyfour two yearolds still remain eligible for it and again the East will have a strong hand to play This event is over the Futurity course which is 170 feet short of threequarters of a mile mileGeneral General manager Matt J Whin of the Kentucky Jock y Club has returned from New York where he s tent a vacation of a couple of weeks fol lowh g the close of the Latonia summer meeting but ie will leave again for Saratoga within a day horsemen in the autumn or si to interest eastern ciicuit which will close stak s on the Kentucky on ugust 17 He took in the racing at Empire City for a few days and said that many of the leadiSig owners and trainers assured him that they will nominate their best horses in many of the rich tstaki s in the uuttiuiu
