: y DORVAL PARK OPENING DAY Heavy Morning Rain Turns Track Into Quagmire Woodth rush Easily Accounts for Feature Horse Special Delayed. MONTREAL, Que., September 17. The fall meeting of the Dorval Park Jockey Club opened this afternoon witli the Lakeside Purse as the feature offering. Heavy and continued rains throughout the morning turned the going into n veritable quagmire, which was fetlock deep. Despite unfavorable weather conditions a good-sized crowd journeyed to the course. Mud runners of the pronounced type held the attention of the speculatively inclined. Woodthrush accounted for the feature race when he easily defeated Miss Orb and Broom Peddler. R. T. Wilsons noted sire Olambala figured prominently in the results of the day, two of his get being returned winners, Little Dear in the opening dash and Woodthrush. Several withdrawals were necessitated when the horse special from Blue Bonnets failed to arrive due to an accident to the locomotive. Commencing today all races save those at 00 will carry fourth money at Dorval Park. D. S. Gillies, who is the presiding judge here, arrived this morning from Hamilton. Dave Heisman will depart from here for Toronto to arrange the rautuel department for the coming Woodbine meeting. Several new ndditions to the horse colony were reported this morning when- the stables of R Scully, C. "Whatley, J. Cotton, Gene Lutz. C. Bur" ton and J. Wilson arrived from Toronto. Two more care are expected later in the evening. W. E. Morton, who races several platers, was called to his home in Washington, D. C, last evening, due to the serious illness of his wife. E. T. Zollicoffer, who maintains au extensive establishment, was an arrival. Mr. Zollicoffer made a tour of inspection of his farm in North Carolina and made arrangements for the transfer of the Fair Play stallion All Smiles from L. H. Baxters farm in Virginia to the home establishment. The mare Sincerity, which raced with distinction several years back and bred to All Smiles, was also transferred to her new home. Mr. Zollicoffer intends to purchase several high-class mares with a view to extensive breeding.
