FAST RACING AT FAIR LATONIA Captain Mac Defeats Jack Hare Jr. in a H air-Raising Finish. BY J. L. DEMPSEY. LATONIA, Ky Octolor 11. C. W. Clarks colors figured in a double Victory this afternoon at La-tonia, his Captain Mac accounting for the feature, ! a mile handicap for a purse of ,200, and to ac- i complish his triumph lie was forced to his utmost j and his margin then was only a nose better than I Jack Hare Jr. There were five of the better grade of horses starting in the race, and they furnished a hard-fought contest throughout. Jack Hare Jr., by virtue of his early speed, maintained a good attendance in the early running, but Captain Mac closed up on him steadily and the stretch found the pair battling valiantly, with the three-year-old outstaying Jack Hare Jr. at the end. Iwin and Woodtrap were also, putting up a hard struggle for the shorter portion of the purse" and the IJradley filly, under Lykes energetic riding, landed it. Siimmerlike weather and a well devised card provided entertaining sport for another big assemblage. From a time point it was the best racing tiiat has been wittiessed this fall, for all the dashes brought about speedy performances. The 1:37 for the mile by Captain Mac duplicates the performance of his stable companion. Sway, and equals the best time during the present racing. Escovar was the other Clark representative to score. It marked the first victory for this onetime promising racer. He beat an ordinary band of maidens that started in the second race at a mile and a sixteenth. Louis A. furnished an unexpected happening in the opener when he stole through next to the inner rail and outstayed Mabel G. and Missed the Time for the purse. Meliora proved by far the best in the third race and led the outsider, Amanda, home. E. R. Bradleys Blowing Bubbles gave a sparkling exhibition by coming from far back to overhaul the apparently certain winner Rising Rock. The latter had taken n long lead from the start and Was five lengths in .advance oa the stretch jturn, but began tiring . sOaii. ..tiftftFil. " The stewards complimented jockey Barrett for his skill in keeping Captain Mac straight when the latter repeatedly tried to bore in when hearing the finish, with the. possibility of fouling Jack Hare Jr. Barrett several times was forced to putt his mount out at the risk of losing the race. It is not unusual for the stewards to rebuke or suspend jockeys for rough riding and it is only fair that they should thus commend a boy who exhibits such a spirit of fairness and forbearance. Jockey J. Howard was suspended for ten days by the stewards for . rough riding while astride Manager Waitc in the closing race. All unpaid claims for lost or destroyed mutuel tickets arising from the seventh race of June 25, when Lady Mountjoy was disqualified, will be settled at the managers office at the track on Thursday, October 14. The number of claims for suclj tickets was so far in excess of the number of unpaid tickets that the management has been unable to make settlement, and is asking the claimants to be present so that an equitable adjustment of the matter may be made. G. D. Bryan, Jr., principal figure of the Jefferson Park track, was an arrival today and will meet with the committee appointed by the Thoroughbred Horse Association members and discuss purses and other features of next winters racing. Angon has been added by private purchase to C. W. Clarks stable and will be shipped with the other Clark-owned horses to Jefferson Park for the racing there, beginning Thanksgiving Day. Jockey F. Quinn sustained a broken collar-bone as a result of his fall on Claude Brown in the opening race. Beginning Tuesday the first race daily at Latonia will be started at 1:45 p. in.
