MOCK ORANGE WINS FEATURE Leased by Granger Gaither, He Wins Chincc-teague Handicap for Him Butwells Good Ride. LAUREL, Md., October 11. The cheaper grade of horses monopolized the card at the State Fair course this-- afternoon, with the Chincotcague a handicap for horses of the older division at a mile and sixteenth, holding most interest because one of its conditions, which provided that the starters be owned cr leascil by members of the Maryland State Fair. Mock Orange, running in the colors of Granger Gaither. won the Chincoteagne in a canter from Betty J. and Chasseur. The former of this pair carried the colors of her owner, Walter J. Salmon. Chasseur and Chief were leased for the occasion by Spaulding J. Jenkins and drew the heaviest backing. Jockey Allen, the young Negro, who has flashed info prominence in the last three weeks, rode a well-judged ride on Mock Orange. Jetting away in front he made all the pace with the Lonawand colt, but judged his ride so well that Mock Orange was able to draw away at the far turn. Mrs. F. Ambrose Clarks colors, showing here for the first time, were carried to victory in the three-quarters of a mile race by The Decision, the aged King James gelding defeating Joek Scot and Trusty.. The Decision was rushed to the front by jockey Haynes and won rather handily, but benefited somewhat byiinterferenco to Trusty going to the far turn. The stewards questioned jockeys Johnson and 1 Stirling, who had the mounts on Jock Scot and 1 Trusty, when Sharpe, who rode Bon Jour, claimed 11 foul. However, the order of the finish was al-I lowed to stand. James Butwell, whose riding has been one of the I featrures of the fall season in Maryland, put-up I one of his strongest rides to win the fifth race with Regreso and thereby piloted the first sueeess-. fill favorite of the afternoon. I J. K. Griffith claimed Martin A. Nomian out of the first race for ,075. J. II. Anderson, the Baltimore turf writer, will act as presiding judge at the four-day meeting opeii-I ins. at Bellair. The Decision was claimed after winning the fourth race by A. Swenke for ,902. S. A. Clopton claimed Fariningdale from J. II. Rosseter for ,910 after the Ormondale colt had shown a good performance. N. S, VaU lost Regreso, winner of the flftli ! race, and C. Koehler led him away for ,950. The Maryland Racing Commission lias amended its decree in respect to the publication of equipment on the program. In future it will be necessary to indicate only whether a horse runs in blinkers, according to notice posted today from James F. Hayward, secretary of the commission. Carlos I M. De Garmendia, judge at large, has been appointed to inspect bandages in the paddock. I Inspection of Gnome after he pulled up lame in the running of the Annapolis Handicap Saturday disclosed that he had bowed a tendon. Charlie Houbre has announced his intention of disposing of the filly Barley Water for breeding purposes. Barley Water is an Imported three-year-old by Fitz Herbert Wheat-ear. Commander J. K. L.
