CANADAS STATISTICS OF RACING NEARLY DOUBLE AS MUCH MONEY DISTRIBUTED AMONG WINNING OWNERS AS IN THE MOST PRO-DUCTIVE PREVIOUS YEAR Racing came back to our northern neighbors this year in such abundant measure as to eclipse all former records and in all departments. Especially was the gain in money, distributed among winning owners noteworthy. The total was the huge sum of ,809,285, the greatest previous record in that regard being 06,185 in 101C. This would have been beaten in 1917 but for the Order in Council, which suddenly stopped racing in Canada that year when about half of the scheduled meetings remained to be carried out. The lavish money provision for 1920 was rewarded with sucli a responsive attendance that the Canadian racing associations enjoyed a high measure of prosperity despite the heavy dally tax levied by the government. The racing, was up to a high standard, and from time to time the best horses on their side of the Atlantic were among those seen in action. Five racing clubs averaged jri excess of 0,000 iii the matter of daily distribution, Kenilworth Park leading because of the 0,000 in money and plate given for the famous clashing of Man o War and Sir Barton. But for that race Kenilworth would have been third to Windsor nl Woodbine. Details of. the Monetary side of the remarkable Canadian racing season are provided in the following interesting tables: ft 2 or k! Co- I?- oi s2,!-o "s as 5 5 o - a- es wo ..rere-s g b b 0 " 2. Riddle, stands as the leading money wlnuer of the Canadian racing field, solely because of the outcome of the Man o War-Sir Barton race. J. IC. L. Ross would otherwise have been the leader; His Canadian record of 4,175 for the year shows that his provision of a stable for an exclusively Canadian campaign was a profitable enterprise, as well as helpful in adding to the attractions of, racing in the Dominion. The stable of George M. Hendrie was third in money won, with a total greater than ever before fell to his share. A notable feature, outgrowth of the record-breaking total raced for, is that In Canada this year thirty-nine owners won 0,000 or more, something unheard of in previous Canadian racing statistics. Following Mr. Hendrie in order the stables of H. Giddiuga, E., T. Zollicof -fer, Suimyland Stable, James Arthur, W. S. Kilmer. W. C. Weant, J. B. Skiukcr, h Farrar and T. Hodge all won in excess of 0,000. Those who participated in the big Canadian distribution to the extent of ,000 or more were the following: Owner. 1st. 2d. 3d. Amt. P 1 0 1 1,000 One "effect of the liberal Canadian provision cf money for racing was the attraction of many of the best horses in tlie United States. It was due to this that at one track and another the turf devotees of Canada enjoyed the spgetaclo of seeing siich stars iis Man o AVar, Sir Barton, Exterminator, Boniface, Baby Grand, Irish Kiss and many others .oE high repute in splendid competition. Juitc properly, a feature was the fostering of the Canadian breeding industry, though the devotion of a fair share of the stakes and purges at all tracks to exclusively Canadian-bred horses. This wise course will tell greatly in time and improve the average class of tlie Canadian thoroughbred. . At present Inferno Is generally considered the best racer bred in Canada, but present inducements should inevitably bring about the production of many as good or better. As the outcome of his one race and one victory in Canada, Man o" War figures as the leading money Winner, not only of- 1920, but of all time, so far as Canadian racing is concerned. The always dependable and high-class handicap gelding Exterminator filled second place as the reward of four victories in well-endowed races. Irish Kiss, also a fast and game horse, was third in the winning list, followed in sequence by Paul Weidel, Bondage, Baby Grand, Dr. Hickman, Midnight Sun, St. Quentin and St. Paul, they constituting the remainder of tlie list of winners of ?lO,000 or more. The Kings Plate winner St. Paul proved himself quite a good racer in subsequent contests and should do well .in the racing of 1921 for Canadian breds. Inspection of the following list of winners of ,000 or more will show that racing across our northern border was not lucking in the participation of. good hotscs in abundance. Horse. . 1st. 2d. 3d.
