TWO MILLION MUTUELS ON SIX RACES Betting on the French courses this year has been prodigious. The Paris correspondent of the London Sportsman states that Sunday, October 24, the Longchamps course wound up its 1920 season before a huge crowd and phenomenal speculation. He writes: "Whatever decrease there exists in- the value of the franc there is certainly no lack of French money for betting purposes. During the whole proceedings there was an endless stream of banknotes pouring into the mutuel booths, and the aggregate of the transactions on the six races was little short of 2,000,000. The Societe dEncourage-ment have had by far the most successful year known since the world-famed race course was opened by King Jerome, representing Emperor Napoleon, in 1857. That interesting ceremony, by the way, took place on a dull day in the presence of a great crowd, as crowds were reckoned in those days. The gate receipts totaled ,000. What would the officials of that period have thought of the present-day figures?
