CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF J. Callahan will ride for W. A. Shea during the winter meetings at New Orleans. The Victorian Australian Derby was run at the Flemington Melbourne course October 30, and won by Saltross, with Nautical second and Syce Knight third. Time, 2:37. Trainer Thomas P. Healey declares that Elisor lias quit riding for the year and that Weiner would act as first rider for the It. T. Wilson horses during the Bowie meeting. When Pampas, for which J. K. L. Ross paid a big price as a yearling, won at Pimlico last week it marked the first winner for Emil Herz stallion Short Grass. Pampas is the last foal of the famous mare Ellangowan, which died last spring. Here is a ridiculous note in the Loudon Sportsman of November 6: "Mr. Freeman Bernstein, one of Americas most prominent race horse owners, who is staying in London, has cabled to Mr. Riddle the owner of Man o War, making a big offer to bring his colt to England next spring to compete against the best British horses. Mr. Riddle has been guaranteed 5125,000 and a cup valued at 5,000."
