WAR CRY IN LAST STRIDE Sunstar Colt Scores Narrowly in Old Dominion Purse. r i His Rider Steals March on Others and Wins Sensational Victory When Apparently Beaten. BOWIE, Md., November 19. An ordinary program was the offering at the Bowie track today, but as the fields were evenly balanced, good sport was enjoyed by the usual daily throng of race lovers. The fifth race, the Old Dominion Purse, had the most pretentious entries, but withdrawals reduced the field to four starters. War Cry was returned the winner, but scored a lucky victory. C. II. Miller hud the mount on the son of Sunstar aud he stole up on the outside while his opponents overlooked him entirely. Before they were aware of it War Cry was on even terms with the others and the colt, gamely responding to punishment, outlasted Clean Gone in a terrifie closing drive. Clean lone soon., raced Pastoral Swain into defeat and looked a winner, but Komanelli was caught napping and lost the decision by the smallest of margins. Wood Violet was a victim of a poor ride, but nosed Pastoral Swain out of the small end of the purse. J. W. McCIellands Mille Pleura raced Rhine-stoue into defeat in the first race and drew uway to win easily at the end. Bhinestone had good speed, but tired in the final sixteenth. Mollle Barnes closed a gap to finish third. Samuel nos.s Parhelion, the favorite, ran far below expectations and was never prominent. F. A. Herolds Kings Belle was much the best in the; ijeeond race, went to the front early and won as she pleased. Lady Granite, next best, was easily sefondt Fading Star come from the rear to utstay"Bfaek Top for third place. The mile race for maidens of all ages produced the poorest field of the day. B. Boss Tuscan Maiden waB the best of the bond and won by ten lengths from Sir Clarence and Bar Coy. The fourth was any easy -win for the Kllrane stables. Head Over Heels, which, after racing close up in the early running, took the lead in the stretch and was never in danger thereafter. W. Fenwlcks Befugee won the seventli race with Pllsen second and Klngling II. third. Wilfreda made the early running, but tired badly after going three-quarters of the race. Morris, astride Befugee, took advantage of an opening uenr the finish and, heading for the inner rail, managed to get his mount in front in .the last few strides. B. Arlingtons Lord Herbert, the favorite, won the sixth race in a driving finish from Albert A., the pacemaker, with Summer Sigh third. The winner was close up all the way and just got up iu time to win by a head. Albert A. made all the pace and only tired in the final strides. Summer Sigii was easily third. The halter men were busy during the afternoon aud several horses changed hands, Crimson Eam-bler being claimed by B. P. Shanner, Turf by J. Bar-roly. Head Over Heels by H. W. Fry and Albert A. by C. Knight. ,
