Poitrel, which won this years great Australian race, the Melbourne Cup, at two miles, under 140 pounds1 in 3:25, retails Carbines greatness. Poitrels time has never been beaten but once, and that was last year, when Artilleryman won in 3:24, and, before that, it had only been equaled once, which strangely enough happened in the preceding year when Night Watch, which, like Poitrel, is a son of St. Alwyne, won in exactly the same time as that of this years race, but he was a five-year-old carrying only 93 poiinds. Poitrel is six-years old arid his performance has only been, surpassed twice as regards- weight. The first time was in 1862, when Archer carried 142 pounds, but he took 3:47 to cover the distance. The record as regards weight was achieved by Carbine in 1890, when he-won easily with 145 pounds in the saddle in 3:28. The greatest three-year-old performance in the history of the Melbourne Cup was that of Aunim, which ran a close third to the old horses GaulUs and The Grafter in 1S97, carrying 118 pounds, which means that lie was handicapped fourteen pounds above the standard weight of a Derby winner and that, it mnst be remembered, is in the Sprirtg of the Australian season.
