CUBAS AUSPICIOUS OPENING Great Crowd Sees Inauguration of Winter Meeting in Havana Buford Stake Winner. HAVANA, Cuba, November 25. The seventh annual winter racing season in Cuba began today at Oriental Park with a record crowd in attendance that included the elite of Havana society and representatives of the United States and Cuban government. The weather was ideal, but the track far from its best as the result of recent rains. The Thanksgiving Inaugural Haudicap was the principal racing attraction and the victoiy of Seuor E. Alvarez Buford was- immensely popular, especially among the Cubans, and there were many of them present. The race was spirited throughout and not until Buford disposed of Helen Atkln in the stretch was his victory assured. It was a great day for the Cuban owners, as in addition to Senor Alvarez success in the stake race, the Armonla Stable scored a double with Pomerene and Black Prince. There was great rejoicing among the Cubans when the colors of Armonla salble were carried to victory in the. inaugural dash of the season, the Jim Gaffney four-year-old Pomerene leading all the, way and gamely outstaying Bill Hunley in a. rousing finish. The Canadian-bred Galopln, which has not raced for a long time, made an .auspicious, comeback- when he led from start to finish in the second. raceu successfully withstanding the best efforts of II. E. Davis Rameau. The favorite, Twenty Seven, was third after racing forwardly throughout. A close and thrilling finish came with the- running of tlie third race, less than a length" separating the first four horses at the end. Sain Rose was the winner, with Doctor D., Hemlock and Bulger, the favorite, following in the order named.
