IN THE KENTUCKY RA CING FIELD STATISTICS OF 1920, SHOWING SOLID GAIN OVER PRECEDING YEARS IN DISTRIBUTION OF MONEY AMONG WINNING OWNERS, AND OTHER INTERESTING PARTICULARS In 1920 the Kentucky racing field broke all its previous records as a producer of money for owners. It did so well in 1919 in that respect that a climax seemed to have been reached, but progress is the constant order with the ruling Kentucky Jockey Club and the 1920 product was 17,5G9 in excess of the splendid record of 1919. The bulk of this increase was furnished at Latonia and Louisville, the Lexington output falling away slightly from its product of 1919, due entirely to its being assigned a smaller number of days of racing. Its daily distribution in 1919 was ,170.25. This increased to ,439.41 in 1920, so Lexingtons progress .was really as genuine as that of the other two tracks composing the "Three L" circuit. The general distribution of the spoils of the race track among winning owners was a reflection of the abounding prosperity of the racing organizations. From the outset of the racing season to its close PHtrons of the sport turned out in. astonishing numbers to view the noble rivalry of the fleet creatures which furnished so many memorable contests. Not. only did Kentucky manifest its traditional devotion to racing, but from all parts of the country there was a constant and profitable attendance that assisted materially in swelling the revenues, of the associations. This was a natural outgrowth of the many highly important stake races which now contribute to the dignity and attractiveness of present-day Kentucky racing. The following tabulations give .a. condensed history of the Kentucky campaign of 1920 andean interesting plctnre of its progress; in all essentials since 1914: it 0t 55 55 -J9 . -A 3 J O o m s? s? 2. , ia2 otr e? ho eg wS. s 2. s2. For a number of years past Edward R. Bradley has at least fared comfortably in the states annual campaign, but this year, for the first time, he enjoys the proud position of first place in the list of its winners. The satisfaction natural to this dignity is enhanced by the reflection that it was attained through the prowress in racing of horses of his own breeding. It was by no great measure of difference that Ills stable earnings exceeded those of Harry P. Whitney, but it was enough. It moreover was by far his most successful year as a turfman. In Behave Yourself, Believe Idle Hour, Busy Signal and Bit of White he had four notably good young racers, all of which should render him further excellent service in 1921. Ever since he extended his racing operations westward, H. P. Wliitney has figured importantly in Kentucky racing and has abundant reasons for viewing his venture With complacency. This year he finished a close second to Mr, Bradley and with such as Upset, Dr. Clark, Tryster and Wildair carried off a pleasing share of the chief stake races of the Kentucky field. Quite probably we shall find Tryster in the role of Kentucky Derby favorite next spring. R. L. Baker enjoyed a highly successful year, the best of his career as a turfman, in finishing third. In spite of the costly two-year-old Southern Gentleman proving a counterfeit in racing, trainer K, Spence did well with the W. V. Thraves horses in landing him in fourth place with a fat stable return. J. N. Camdens stable did well and in Rangoon included one of th6 best of the western two-year-olds. Ral Parr comes next, entirely due to the unexpected success of Paul Jones in the Kentucky Derby. Other owners who participated profitably in Kentucky racing were J. M. Goode, Gallaher Bros., W. R. Coe, E. B. McLean, B. J. Brannon, C. W. Clark, J. K. L. Ross and G. L. Blackford, all of which won 0,000 or more. The owners who won 00 or more were: Owner. 1st. 2d. 3d. Ami. Bradley. E.
