! ij j i | . t i ARCHER, FORDHAM AND SLOAN I | Veteran John Porter Discusses Methods of f i Great Riders and Their Fees. In his recent book John Porter of Kingsclere. the veteran English trainer, whose name it bears, has written something about racing and race riders. Mr. Porter, like everyone who has aeea them ride, puts Pred Archer. George Pordkaai and Tod sio.u, M ■ high pedestal, and make- this criticism concerning them: "Between Archer and Sh.an. I think. Fordham showed the baapj atedloai, and his is th : style of riding that should be taught and . n coaraaed. I do not think either tke extreaaea of Archer or Sloan can give the power and control i over ■ horse that are so needful." Porter describes I G thods of Fordham thus: "lie rode with a ; medium stirrup just short enough to clear the j pommel of the saddle with a little to spare. Tak lag lijcht hold of his horses head, he bailed sUghtly forward, with his hands resting on the horses withers, thus throwing tke weight oato the nl shoulders. The position enabled him to drop late the saddle and control a horse when in difficulties and drive him straight home at the finish of ai i race." Mn Porter relates that --Tiny" Wells. a fine rider, only had a retainer of s.",M per an- . nam from Sir Joseph Ilauley. How different from the 0,000 a year that Mr. James While gave ; Donoa-hue to be his first iorkey for two seasons or j | the SLO.lMKt that Danny Maker received from Lord | j Rosel.eiy. in addition to which Mr. "Fairie" paid • him aaother SLYOOO for second claim » Porter adds: j "1 have always held the opinion that racing has j suffered owing to the toiidenc.v to bestow up n jock eya extraragaat easolaaseats. it has beea the ruin of many of them."
