WHITNEY HOPEFULS FOR NEXT YEAR That the Whitney stable figures so highly in our racing is no wonder The Whitney breeding re ¬ sources are beyond cavil With stallions among the best of the world and brood mare of tin1 highest type the Whitney stud is simply bound to send great racers to our tracks annually The young horses now available for the stables two yearold racing of next year number fortyeight Exquisite breeding is represented by the twentytwo colts and twentysix fillies That the latter pro dominate is well and it would be a just cause for congratulation if all of our breeding farms should reproduce the same condition for a number of years We are amply supplied with virile and successful stallions for more than our present needs but lack brood marcs Hence it is no hardship that in this Whitney list the great sire Broomstick lias four colts and twelve fillies This is a fine thing for our breeding of the future It will be noted that the splendid mare Regret has a son by the young Spearmint sire Chicle Curiosity will attend its development In her racing days Regret was a great favorite East and West Great race mares have frequently proved dire failures in breeding as witness our Miss Woodford Fircnzp Beldame Imp and others Regret was so conservatively raced however that her vitality must be unimpaired She may shine again as a wonderful stud matron
