MRS MANTON AND HER JOCKEYS It has often been related but with what degree of truth is not known that in the days of her widowhood the Duchess of Montrose who raced notably in England as Mrs Manton proposed marriage to the great English jockey Fred Archer and that he delicately declined It is of the Duchess too that the famous story is told that once when she upbraided Hnxtable for not having come sooner and won his race he replied Your Graced I could not come without the horse
