HIGH COMMAND IS BEATEN Succumbs to Rouleau in a Nobly Contested Finish Favorites Have a Hard Time in inLouisvilles Louisvilles Good Racing on ona a Fast Track LOUISVILLE Ky May 15 Montfort Jones con ¬ tinued Iiis success this afternoon when his liouleail scored an impressive victory in the seveneighths dash after a sensational finish with High Com ¬ mand carrying the silks of T C McDowell Both racers fought it out stubbornly all through the last threesixteenths with Rouleau just managing to get up to win in the last stride The finish un ¬ doubtedly would have been reversed had High Command had a race in him this spring for he showed that he was slightly short His perform ¬ ance this afternoon was the first under colors in almost two years and it was a sparkler for he displayed remarkable speed in the early running and began from the barrier like a shot Rouleau was unfortunate at the start and was away stum ¬ bling and far back of the others but he moved up with great speed and followed High Command closely until reaching the stretch turn where he moved up with the leader and then began the hard duel that had its termination with Rouleaus nose victory Jouett landed third thirdLloyd Lloyd Gentrys Sir Thomas Kean furnished an upset in the mile dash for threeyearolds exclu ¬ sively and which was intended as the feature when he beat Coyne The victory of Sir Thomas Kean was in great contrast to his running at Lexington where he succumbed to Dnrjeellng He was in close pursuit of Coyne after going the first quarter and when Coyne tired slightly in the last sixteenth lie came on resolutely and won by a head Ben Valet landed third and Bunga Buck finished in front of the others Had Bunga Buck been given a more energetic ride lie might have been dangerous Smith kept him far back and made but feeble effort to keep the colt to his task taskClose Close finishes marked the running of all the races but favorites were downed in most instances though they figured prominently in the conten ¬ tion Lloyd Sentrys GroundSwell was an in ¬ tended good tiling in the opening race but the finish found Archie Alexander leading him by i nose having got up in the last few strides to overtake the leader The Nephew was third and probably best in the race for he was shuffled back soon after the start and had to close an immense gap gapBEMORECAREFUL BEMORECAREFUL FAILS ADMIRERS ADMIRERSBemorecareful Bemorecareful was given preference in the second race and came in for considerable and con ¬ fident support but the finish found him in third place Quince Garden and Demos leading him with Quince Garden the winner by a narrow margin marginCorilla Corilla was backed steadily in the third race in which a quartet of ordinary ones met but she landed in last place Jetsam winning without great difficulty from John Arbor with Montillo in third place Gorilla ran disappointingly and was done for after going the first threequarters threequartersTodays Todays attendance was of surprisingly good size considering the off day program The weather was t ol and most of those at the course were envel ¬ oped in topcoats Track conditions were perfect perfectThe The stewards during the forenoon made inquiries witli respect to the acrobatic performances of Ginger and questioned owner Applegate and trainer Spence as to the probable cause Both declared that they were as puzzled by his exhibitions as any one else and could not assign a reasonable cause for his poor showing on the occasion of his defeat unless the hard surface under the slushy covering of the track was the factor in preventing his racing well Ginger ran In the same plates that he wore when he started on the muddy track at Lexington lie did not sprawl or slip at Lex ¬ ington as he did when beaten here hereUpon Upon complaint of jockey Garner that jockey Pool had struck the formers mount over the head with his whip during the running of the second race which was corroborated by an examination of the paddock judge Pool was suspended for five days by the stewards stewardsThe The horses running in Mrs Henry Dattncrs silks including Minute Man Bunga Buck and others will be trained hereafter by H Deaven port portA A L Kirby will ship his eighteen horses to Thorncliffe tomorrow and race next summer on the Canadian circuit Jockey G Walls will accom ¬ pany the stable and do the riding for Kirby KirbyNight Night Watch has been sold on private terms by B T Brannon to J Ilines IlinesStarter Starter A B Dade confirmed today his appoint ¬ ment as starter next summer at the Devonshire Park meetings meetingsMrs Mrs J L Paul claimed Kingfisher from the last race at a cost of 2100 2100Magnet Magnet Land owned by M and J Lowenstein furnished excitement for the crowd when he fell exhausted after the finish and appeared to be dead He revived after a prolonged stay on the track and walked to his stable seemingly none the worse for his mishap
