VERSATILITY OF THE GREAT CARBINE It is unusual for horses to run in two weightfor age races the same day but it is remembered that Carbine and Marvel did so at the Australian Jockey Club of Sydney N S W Autumn meeting of 1891 Tills was in the AllAged Stakes and Cumberland Stakes Odds of 5 to 2 were laid on Carbine for the mile Marvel being at 3 to 1 against and the other two runners were Eureka and Cowette The odds were upset as Marvel defeated Carbine by four lengths in 143 the other two being beaten off offOnly Only Carbine and Marvel ran for the Cumberland Stakes later the same day and though Marvel was not reckoned a genuine stayer his defeat of Car ¬ bine hud temporarily lessened backers belief in the latter The result was that the books were taking 5 to 4 about Carbine at the close of business and Marvel was at even money with most The pace was slow for the greater part of the race but that did not avail Marvel as Car ¬ bine ran away from him at the finish beating him by seven lengths in 404
