NEW YORK N Y May 25 S C Hildreths Reign of Terror came to a temporary and unsus ¬ pected check in the ninth running of the Youthful Stakes at Jamaica this afternoon and J S Cosdena Lord Baltimore reestablished his claim to respecta ¬ ble ranking among the best of the early eastern twoyearolds when he easily defeated the Kancocas Stable entry in the stake The race was worth 5350 to the winner winnerMr Mr Hildreths election of Billy Watts and the presence of Sandc in his saddle engendered public confidence in the ability of Billy Watts although the speculators had gone to the course looking to Little Chief to win for them and the Hildreth entry always ruled favorite favoriteMuddy Muddy going prevailed Little Chief a fast starter showed in front of the inside position and Fator sent him along at a merry clip to forestall any possibility of defeat for the stable if Billy Watts with which the stable had declared to win encountered ill luck at the barrier Lord Baltimore followed him closest and drew into even terms rounding the turn Billy Watts meanwhile was having his troubles getting close to the flying leaders and at the turn into the stretch it became apparent that if the Rancocas colors were to be home in front Little Chief would have to save the day Fator accordingly shook up his mount but he was unequal to the task cut out for him and Lord Baltimore came around him into the stretch drew into a long lead and crossed the finishing line five lengths in advance of Little Chief Billy Watts was right behind his stable companion at the end endLord Lord Baltimores performance stamps him as a highclass twoyearold a fact suspected because of his Maryland form but one that fell into dispute on the occasion of his first appearance here last week when he was beaten by S C Hildreths Kai sang and Little Chief Today the latter met him at equal weights While it was not Little Chief that defeated Lord Baltimore on the occasion of his only reverse his prestige is fully restored by todays conquest for at the time Kaisang over ¬ threw Lord Baltimore it appeared that Little Chief might have beaten both had hn not been indulged after it became apparent that Kaisang could take down the long end of the purse purseCIRRUS CIRRUS IMPRESSIVE VICTORY VICTORYDespite Despite the Raneocas Stable reversal in the Youthful it was not without its victory A truly impressive victory it was with Cirrus in the heroic role The son of Tracery ruled favorite for the Ansonia Handicap at longer odds than he should have been considering the class of his opposition and the nature of the footing But the notable part of Ills performance is not that he won but the manner and the time in which he did it Irish Dream that speedy rogue from the Kilrane Stable set the early pace with Cirrus always within strik ¬ ing distance and under restraint from Sande Passing the halfmile post Sande called on Cirrus Quickly he dashed to the front He was then taken in hand again to win easing up in the remarkable time of 140 which is but one and twofifths of a second slower than the record for the course when it was fast Captain Alcock a trailer for the first threequarters of a mile closed fast under punishment to take second place from Tip pity Witchet in the closing strides stridesDisagreeable Disagreeable weather marked the running of to ¬ days card It rained throughout tho morning and well into the afternoon Before the fourth race however the downfall had been reduced to a drizzle and the small crowd of stanch regulars that was on hand moved from in under the stands to spend the remainder of the afternoon on the lawn lawnWhile While the public divided their support between Maidens Ballet and Mademoiselle Caileau In the first race they overlooked the Celt colt Dunsandel which found the going made to his order and led all the way to win by two lengths Larry Water burys Diomedes ran a remarkable race to get up in the final stride for second place coming from the rear with great speed after having been a dis ¬ tant trailer in the early running Maidens Ballet was thin racing forwardly throughout but tiring in the last sixteenth sixteenthA A stirring finish
