STAMPEDE OVER GLADIATOR Wins Olympic Selling Stakes and Brings Record BidUp Last Days Racing at Jamaica JamaicaFeatured Featured by Coltiletti and andSandes Sandes Brilliant Biding NEW YORK N Y May 20 Jamaicas last spring racing afternoon was full of sharp action and good racing form All the winners should have won though only three Gladiator William A and Kcckna were public choices Of the other races there was perplexity in a speculative way wayThe The racing piece was the Olympic Selling Stakes As a race it was not much for Gladiator won it in a jocular sort of way after his party had driven the men who lay odds to cover From 2 to 1 the odds on Arnold Rothstcins Superman Lotowanna colt was driven down point by point to 4 to 5 and in the race itself after laying within striking distance of the leaders Gladiator answered Kummers call by running away from his company and winning in a canter canterLast Last year Gladiator was accounted as a 30000 colt He ran second to Upset in the Latonia Derby and showed great speed and quality in some local races Late in the summer Gladiator was coughing and reported as being touched in the wind Todays air was favorable for roarers of all kinds kindsThe The Olympic had selling conditions Gladiator was sent out with 120 pounds and valued at 4000 to get such weight After he had won horse buyers gathered at the judgesjrostrum There were sev ¬ eral bidderir fbr Gladiator When the contention for the colt ended he was the ostensible property of the Baltimore horseman Paul Connelly for 12000 an 8000 runup for the swelling of the first days purses at Jamaicas next meeting meetingThe The runup was a record since Pontis selling race sale at Jerome Park in 18S5 when he was taken from the late Pierre Lorillard for 14500 after winning a selling race raceThere There have been some big advances more re ¬ cently but none as high as todays Among them were those of Go Between at Shecpshead Bay Pen Rose at Belmont Park and Sailing B last year ht Saratoga Sailing B by the way was then owned by the Rothstcin confederacy It is among the pos sibilities that Gladiator may not leave the R d stone Stable though denials about a protective and collusive bid was denied after the sale Among the bidders was Fred Taral for the Vivaudou Stable The boldness of running a 30000 colt in a selling race caused the raise as it should have done Such examples are however without solution if the trick of protective bidding to save the full penalty is successful successfulttUECREEK ttUECREEK AND BILLY McLAUGHLIN McLAUGHLINThe The afternoons racing was good to see over dry ¬ ing out racing ground which improved as the sun shone and the horses mellowed it There was a fine attendance and the air was ideal for outdoor folks There were one or two most capable bits of action notably Master Colfillettis riding effort on Mr X in the third another by the same energetic youngster on Lady Delhi in the first and Sandes nice work on Quccrcek in the Ocean Handicap The latter was the second racing feature of the afternoon and the second race for threeyearolds at threequarters of a mile Last Straw was made favorite but did not cut a figure Qnecreek and Billy MeLaughlin had the race to themselves It was a stirring one with a dingdong finish in which Sande landed Quccreek winner in clever fashion by a short neck neckDavid David Gideons Lady Delhi scored her second straight victory today when she led borne twelve other youngsters in the initial race It was prac ¬ tically a duel between the Gideon representative and Little Patsy carrying the colors of W Daniel The latter took the lead entering the stretch had to relinquish it in short order but gamely hung on and fought out every inch of tiie ground how over without being able to gain on Lady Delhi The daughter of Dolhi Lady Teresa is a courageous miss and responded to every call made on her by F Coltiletti who aided her materially in holding on to her slender advantage advantageColtilletti Coltilletti was again to the fore in the third race when he landed Mr X a winner by the smallest of margins in a rousing finish the outcome of whicu was in doubt until the final stride With riders reversed Salute would have won as he ran in the best going all the way while Mr X was forced in the worst part of it on tho back stretch stretchThe The fifth race a fiveeighths dash for twoyear olds brought together a small but good field Four of tho five starters were winners but tho public knew its business and William A was made fa ¬ vorite Well ridden by Clarence Kummer the Ap plegate colt came from behind to win by three quarters of a length from Column which had set the early pace but weakened at the crucial test Miles S doing her best was an outclassed third thirdColtiletti Coltiletti who had divided with Kumtnpr the riding laurels up to the sixth race rode Beckna a long overdue good thing to victory This aged son of Troutbeck passed into the ownership of Abe Hallow at tho sale of the P T Chinn horses He was knocked down for 5000 Aged and infirm and primed to win for many a day Beckna made good at short odds but not as good things should do He followed close to the pace of Merchant Marine under light restraint in the early running came to the outside for tho final drive and held on gamely hut had to be hustled to withstand the fast closing Ten Buttons Merchant Marine was third thirdSergeant Sergeant Mortimer Murphy sent Salesman and Chevalier two of his charges to Canada in care of Otto Torrell tonight tonightA A Marrono claimed Mr X for 1934 He will bo trained by Clarence Buxton BuxtonT T J Carroll claimed War MaehinV for 2000 This is tho second time the horse has changed hands by the claiming route at Jamaica JamaicaJ J Simon Healy
