RANCOCASIilLDRETHSANDE Carry Off Honors and Principal PrincipalPrizes Prizes Saturday at Belmont William A Wins Keene Memorial Grey Lag Takes Belmont Another for Last Straw NEW YORK N T June 11 Sam Hildretlis Rainocas Stable horses won both of Belmont Parks Saturday stake races and his rider Earl Sande rode botli tin stake winners and another The two netted Hildreth 1192 and Mr Belmonts gold cup to grace the sideboard of the Rancocas Farm house at Jobstown N J JThe The Keene Memorial first of the two features furnished a fine contest It was the brst of the twoyearold Rices of the year and William A the Jack Atkin Tehera colt Hildretlis recent acquisition from C A Applegate Avon its 0525 authoritatively and in such stylo as really good young horses win their races William A was sec ¬ ond choice had trouble in being soundly kicked and cut on both stifles at the post by BIglieart which knocked him back to last place in the first half furlong lie made up his ground under a powerful drive and beat Sweep By by a half length Such is class victory under disadvantage and over bad luck luckThe The Keene Memorial race was a good one to see There were ten colts in it To the original cartoonist Fisher added his namesake He only got in the way Bigheart was fractious at the post and plungingly kicked William A twice before the field got away with Bud Fisher in front of Broomstcr and Sweep By The latter took the lead easily and ran straight and true with Ultimo Bigheart and Black Rascal wide npart on the broad way but really Japped to the main stand Here William A last away was under a powerful drive and gaining gainingFifty Fifty yards away from the winning post he was level with Mr S Lawsons fine son of Sweep and Bigheart heads apart and from there he gained iiifh by inch in most resolute fashion to win by half a length witli Sweep By second nearly clear of Bighear The rest were two lengths back backBEST BEST TWOYEAROLD OF YEAR YEARWilliam William A impresses one as the best twoyear old neon in New York racing this year He isnt sit bin best yet The colt has nil the proportion of a real good horse size and balance To some he may seom a trifle leggy But his legs fit his body well The colt stands 103 hands high and is a decided black Hildreth evidently got his moneys worth when ho paid S30000 for William A He didnt make as good a bargain when he sold Sweep By for friOOO friOOOThe The Belmont Stakes drew the crowd as of first importance on account of its glorious past and value The race was below Bolmont Stakes lustro Four colts Leonardo II of the West and Grey Lag Sporting Blood and Quecreck of New York possession raced for the prize Sporting Blood jroiitly fancied by his own was made the favorite He was a false one But one can do as one likes with ones own Leonardo II and Grey Lag were next in equal financial esteem Quccreek properly was the outsider outsiderLeonardo Leonardo II and Quecrock were away first and fast together but the free and longstriding west ¬ erner took a long early lead and held it to the long turn when Sandc in his favorite outside position brought Grey Lag to him The Rancocas colt was in front as the pair reached the straight and after a half furlong of a lapped struggle Leonardo II rave way and Grey Lag came on to win by three lengths The time was 210 with the first two qtiarlors in 23 the threequarters in 111 the mile In 137 and the mile and a quarter in 203 203The The old Belmont course was a shepherds crook in shape Its record is Man o Wars 214 mado last year The present Bolmont course is an oval and should run as fast as the old course by any firstclass horse Grpy Lag wasnt pressed He could have run the last throeeighths much faster Good horses win in such time as victory demands md the last threeeighths of the Belmont Stakes inly called for 3Jif the last half mile was in r2 r2LAST LAST STRAW SANDES THIRD WINNER WINNERSande Sande rode his third winner out of five chances in the sixth race lie was up on Widonors Last Straw the stout favorite of throoyoarold fillies in i throoquartor mile dash on the main course Maidens Ballet and Dough Girl were second and third Incidentally todays score made three victories in five starts for Last Straw this year In ll race Last Straw lay away from Dough Girl nnd Maidens Ballot for i mere quarter and then camo on about hor and Sandes business to win by fivi lengths eased up upThe The other races woro interesting The Arabic lloiiyhnhmn from Mr Knapps string won the opener for assorted maidens at a mile They were common eat tin and doubtless Mr Knapp was glad to lose the winner after the horso fabled name under Kioghs vigor and always near the front beat Current Events and Theodora in a staggering finish Polar was the favorite and Saudi rode him five pounds over his entered weight Ho fluttered in front and then foil away as he has fallen away before Polar has already built ill a more or less diHcrvodly bad racing character characterKimor Kimor Johnson an ddson favorite took the nlxmt two miles Douglastown Steeplechase Handi rap at his leisure He raced into the lead fiom Wiso t Fool when ho cloo galloped and jumped Jocosely and won as if ho enjoyed his loneliness lonelinessThe The nine furlong selling race fifth on the card produced a good contest The horses were of medium class The handsome Frenchbred golding Sundial II wiis the natural favorite Ho should have won but lost a winning race Good riders have bad moments Sunde had several in the finish witli Sundial II In a good position at the straight head ho chose the rail path to come up with Dirk Hill and Toucanct racing before him He chose wrongly Babin on Dark Hill shut him off as IIP hud the right to do Sande waited at the rail too long Then he pulled Sundial II to the outside and gained on the leaders He was too late how ovor and Daik Hill won by half a length from Toiicanet with Sundial II third thirdThere There was a fine crowd out to see the racing It was between 17000 and 18000 strong The going was as smooth and elastic as it has boon every day of tho present mooting Onl wind the horses in hampered action n mi IHM it groat deal
