BEHAVE YOURSELF BEATEN Unexpectedly Gives In to Brother Batch in Latonias Derby Angon Victorious in the Valuable ValuableQuickstep Quickstep Handicap with Jack JackHare Hare Jr a Close Second LATONIA Ky June 11 The thirtyninth re ¬ newal of the Latonia Derby which had its running this afternoon carried with It one cf those out ¬ standing surprises which make racing the fasci ¬ nating sport it is The victor proved to be G T Arnolds Brother Batch earlier in the year held in high esteem but relegated some time ago to a more lowly estimation on account of an ailment that was supposed to have left him with an in ¬ fection and respiratory trouble Behave Yourself conqueror of the best colts that could be mustered to start in the Kentucky Derby landed in second place with Uncle Velo the only other starter fin ¬ ishing far back The mile and a half was cov ¬ ered in 247 the slowest Latonin Derby on record excepting when Lazzarone won in 1894 The net value of the race to the winner was 14900 exceeded only by Be Franks 10160 in 1919 and Upsets 10300 last year yearBehave Behave Yourself was the pronounced favorite and was regarded as almost certain to be the victor But the task of carrying 131 pounds and bping under pressure from practically the start without i breathing spell proved too much At that he was going best at the finish and at a longer distance would have Overhauled the failing winner which tired badly in the last 100 yards and was de ¬ cidedly groggy at the end In the earlier running Garner had held him under sharp restraint but in close pursuit of Behave Yourself and Uncle Velo which had alternated in the lead leadBehave Behave Yourself was forced at the outset to take command due to the waiting tactics of Pool and Garner respectively astride Uncle Velo nnd Brother Batch They were closely grouped how ¬ ever presenting n splendid racing picture when approaching the stand for the first time nnd sub ¬ sequently to the halfmile ground where Uncle Velo took the lead His tenure there was of short duration for Behave Yourself although being hard ridden passed him again before reaching the stretch turn but at this juncture Brother Batch headed the pair and raced into a long lead Be ¬ have Yourself however would not give up the struggle and valiantly decreased the winners lead and was going the fastest at the end It was Brother Batchs third start in as many days having won a purse yesterday at threequarters nnd suf ¬ fered defeat the day before in a similar race It is not improbable that had the field been of larger size he would have been an absentee His trainer C C Van Meter had remarked at the time he withdrew Marjorie Hynes from the Quickstep Handicap I am taking out one that has a chance and starting one that has no chance He referred to Brother Batch as having no chance chanceASSOCIATION ASSOCIATION SAVES 5000 5000Behave Behave Yourselfs nonsuccess meant a saving of 5000 to the association This amount would have gone to the Bradley representative as a bonus un ¬ der the Latonia Derby conditions for also having won the Kentucky Derby Mr Bradley bad ex ¬ pressed his intention of donating the bonus to the orphanages of Kenton and Campbell counties in the event of the colts success successAdverse Adverse weather threatening a downpour at any minute was responsible for a decrease in the crowd expected but enough were on hand to test tho capacity of the spacipus plant Most of the visitors wore tardy in coming and even after the running of the second race there were streams of pooplo wending their way into the grounds The club house and reserved section had its capacity of occu ¬ pants Conspicuous in these inclosures were per ¬ sons of countrywide prominence prominenceOriginally Originally a program had boon provided that com ¬ pared with the best offerings this year But the deluge of the morning which caused the track to be again heavy depleted some of the already light fields and detracted much from the sport sportSeveral Several of tho finishes were however of the closest kind that In the Quickstep Handicap which served as the secondary feature and worth 58o net to the winner found Angon and Jack Hare Jr separated by loss than a nock with Miss Jemima a short distance in back of the pair An ¬ gon displaying all his old time post tactics de ¬ layed the start considerably but suddenly took a notion to become docile and starter Dade taking advantage of the horses mood dispatched the field in perfect alignment Miss Jemima at once raced into tho load quickly followed by Angon with Sowoll Combs Jack Hare Jr and Minute Man closest in pursuit There was no material change in tho racing order except that Minute Man dropped back until the stretch turn was reached whore Angon passed into the load and scoiiuil an easy winner but Jack Hare Jr would not be denied and his menacing rush promised well but the finish was top near and he missed the victory by a short neck neckWOODTRAES WOODTRAES LUCKY VICTORY VICTORYWoodtrap Woodtrap scored in lucky fashion in the mile and a sixteenth 2000 handicap when ho got up in the last stride to head Kinburn The latter had appeared all over the winner in the stretch but succumbed mainly because of a poorly ridden fin ¬ ish Francis who had the mount on Kinburn also rode Napoo faultily In the opener which probably resulted in his defeat by Herald and Redmon noses separating the trio trioTho Tho crack Miss Joy again showed her mettle with a hollow victory in tho second race in which she triumphed over Casey It was her first race in the
