EASTERN AND WESTERN BEST ALL RACING CRACKS TO MEET AT SARATOGA --- COMPARISON Of THE BEST HORSES FROM ALL AMERICAN CORNERS TO MEASURE STRIDES AT AUGUST MEETING It is known to all thoughtful racing men that for many years Saratoga has been the proving ground of the American turf. There it has long been the custom for the equine stars of the Fast and West to gather for bloodless, but none the less exciting, conllict. with our Cauadian neighbors taking a profitable chance now and then. It thus comes about annually that thousands of good citizens look forward with keen expectancy to what may be revealed to them at that pleasant place to visit. Truth to tell, the easterners have generally had the best of these yearly battles in which speed is the only weapon. Not always, though. Not to go back to the days when Falsetto came out of the West and put a succession of supposed invineiblos to ignominious rout, it seems only yesterday that the admirable Billy Kelly dropped in at Saratoga and wiped the earth with all on offer there of bis own age. However, ancient happenings cut little figure iu comparison with the entertainment to be reasonably expected this year. It may be said at the outset that the "West has practically nothing to present in the class of horses four years old and over. There the Fast has not only the brutal strength of preponderant numbers, but it has nearly all the best race horses of the day of that class. Best Pal is the best the West will offer, and a downright good colt he is. Hut he now lelongs to the hnndicapper and his chances against such as Mad Hatter, Purchase. Exterminator. Audacious and others of that stripe do not seem of the hopeful character. Hrookholt is speedy and a tine weight, carrier. He should be dangerous iu sprints. Kthel 5 ray is good under light weight. Hut the best of the AVcst are calculated herein. In the matter of three-year-olds the Fast also seems to have the best of it. Kight now Grey Lag appears a remarkably good colt and the master of anything of his age now racing. He is a superb young racer and. unless Jimmy Howe succeeds iu returning Tryster and Prudery to racing iu their form of last year, does not seem likely to be beaten, when racing against his rivals on anything like equal terms as to weight. Iu behave Yourself and Hlack Servant the West will have two representatives which even Grey Lag cannot tritle with, and, if good. Hit of White should prove a worthy opponent of the eastern fillies, good as some of them are. In lluribus the West has a colt which has had a long let-up on account of an injury at the Lexington meeting. If the early estimate of his owner concerning his prowess should prove correct, he may be a real sensation at Saratoga. Mulciber and Hon Homme are also cases of hope, based on what they were expected to do last spring and the possible benelit of a long retirement. When it comes to the developed two-year-olds the West stands upright and several heads taller than the Fast. This is because of its possession of two lillies that stand out alone. Nothing has taken place to show what Miss Joys limit may be. She has been beaten twice through being pulled up to allow her splendid stablemate Fair Phantom to win. Otherwise she has won her live races unextended, and in her may be an iuherilant of the glories attaching to the names of such as Regret. Heldame, Artful or Miss Woodford. The only possibility against her revealed iu the Fast so far is bound up in the glossy hide of Morvich and. good as he is, he might tind more than, his muteh in Fair Phmitom, let alone -the nonpareil Mi Joy. However that may be,, Morvich is the best eastern-owned colt of bis age beyond doubt. Such as "William A. and Hroomster failed badly when asked to. take up penalties and concede weight iu the running of the Tremont Stakes. they are good, but not great, ami if Hot. Music has continued to improve, he may prove their superior at Saratoga. There is a strong second eastern string to draw from iu Olympus, liunstar. Mustard Seed. Column and Kai-Sang. Some idea of the comparative merits of ten leading eastern-owned two, three-year-olds and oldsters and of the same number of western-owned of the same divisions may be afforded here. Those selected can all race effectively. There are, of course, others. Saratoga racing is prolific of developments and surprises. This year will probably provide its share.
