GREY LAGS GREAT FINNISH Wins Victory Over Black Servant in Devonshire International. 4 Crowd of 15,000 Sees Wojiderful Race for 0,000 Prize Two New Track Records Made. AVINDSOR. Out., July 30. The Kancocas Stables good colt. Grey Lag added to his laurels this afternoon when he won the S2O.000 Devonshire International Stakes, a dash of a mile and an eighth. Grey Lag was ridden by Sande. came from behind in the stretch run and under a terrific drive Just managed to get up in the closing strides to beat K. R. Bradleys Black Servant by the shortest of margins. Both Sande and Lyke put up a rousing finish and it was probably the most spectacular ever witnessed at Devonshire. Grey Lag was forced to clip two and three-fifth seconds off the track record to land the big prize. Black Servant showed a keen turn of speed from the start aud set a terrific pace all the way. He outran his opiwnents to the first turn and opened up a lead of three lengths and led by a comfortable margin for a mile before he began to weaken. When Sande went to work on Grey Lag the colt responded with splendid courage and gradually improved his position. Lyke never gave up, however, but despite his efforts Black Servant could not quite last it out. The fractional time of the race was 23r,, 47, 1:11, 1:38 and 1:50. Tlie. race was run before a- crowd of 1,1.000 enthusiastic followers"of the sport. The various Improvements made were commented upon favorably and the general impression was that the plant will be the most picturesque in Canada when fully completed. The Kancocas Stable was not so lucky in the fourth race, which divided interest with the running of the stellar event. Thunderclap was a 7-to-20 favorite iu this race. He made tin- pace until well into the homestretch, where Slippery Elm overhauled him and in a hard drive the latter won going away by a half length. A new track record was also established by the winner iu this race, which ran the mile and a sixteenth in l:41i, a full second faster than the previous record.
