MANY ARRIVALS AT MOBILE i 1 i Alabama City Crowded With Visitors Attracted by Meeting. • 1 i More Horses Get in from New Orleans and Mexico City — Local People Inspect Fair Grounds. *• * MOBILF. Ala . March 5.-More visitors eutered this city today than in a long while and the ten days race meeting which opens on next Wednesday is the magnet that is attracting them. The trains which came from New Orlean-; were forced to carry extra cars for the accommodation of the tourists and even then congestion was unavoidable. In addition to_ this quite a few came in rrom the North. The nearness of the race meeting is reflected in the hotel lobbies and on the streets. It is an assured fact that Mobile will have more people within its confines than in many years by the tim« the inaugural day rolls around. Although a frost struck this vicinity last night the temperature rose rapidly during the day aud the cold wave had spent itself entirely by late in the afternoon, while a warm sun dried the Fair Grounds track out eaeafdeterj . After it was closed to hoises for exercise at 10 ocoek a crew of workmen labored on it with harrows until dark. That the local peopL- are hatereeted in the racing was shown by the large crowd which visited the course during the early morning hours. At one time more than 100 automobiles were parked iu the Fair Grounds and the visitors gave everything eon-ne ted with tie sport a rlaee scrutiny. They visited the stables, watched the horses indulge in their exercise gallops and inspected the many improve meats that has been made in the lacing plant since last winter. Several more carloads of heraea came in from New Orleans late last night. Among them were the BtaMee of Jeha J. Troxler. Ilickey Bros, in charge of trainer -James Brown, and M. .Shields. Troxler brought five horses from the Crescent City . including Hetmcreea, which he will train for Mrs. .1. I. Nagle. and Pattern, a recent purchase from W. C. Overton. Bob McCarvey sent Port Light and Maine Hand here to race. The rest of his string will remain in N" -w Oilcans for the time being. T. II. Wils.n purchased Hickoiy and Night Light. ihe latter a two-y ear-old by Prince fllinaif, from S. L. Blackford before leaving New Orleans, aud the former will race at the local meeting. Tommy Doyle has Taken over the contract on jockey .1. P. Byan. formerly connected with the II. Xeaateter stable. Byan. who started out to be a pugilist, bat wound up iu the saddle, intends to stick to the bitter profession from now on. .lockey .loe Dominii k was an arrival from Havana. He will ride free lance here. !•. St. .lohn of Detroit, whose horses are uuder the care of trainer Joe Three, came up from the Creeeeat City today. Jockey K. Chhrretta has affiliated himself with the J. McPherson stable for the Mobile meeting. Corydon, owned by Pat Kuchlckamp, will be trained by his brother Bd bete. Blond Buddy picked up a nail while galloping, but the injury was discovered in time and he suffered but little ill effects. e «
