LOUISVILLE DERBY VIEWS Morvich Overwhelming Choice of Fifteen Most Likely Starters for Big Prize LOUISVILLE Ky May S The forty eighth renewal of the Kentucky Derby will be run at Churchill Downs next Saturday May 13 The Kentucky Jockey Club adds 50000 to the race with an additional 7000 gold serv ¬ ice as a souvenir to the winner Churchill Downs in its best bib and tucker is ready to receive the thousands who are expected to witness the Derby Every one of the 416 boxes was reserved some time ago and there are lundreds of demands that cannot be filled There will be no reserved seats the grand ¬ stand being open to the public Colonel ST J Winn general manager of the Kentucky Jockey Club lias had built a double deck spacious steel grandstand just opposite the jaddock inclosure It is also open to the pub ¬ ic and will contain no boxes or reserved seats seatsThe The usual public interest in this great race has been further stimulated this year by the expected presence of iorvich the unbeaten unnymede colt which in the colors of Ben amin Block surpassed the twoyearold rec ¬ ord of Man o War The Derby favorite has been trained at Jamaica by Fred Burlew where his trials have been the wonder of the urf world On Wednesday last he galloped hreequarters between races In 1 12 the Irst eighth in 11 seconds the quarter in 22 ys the half in 45 the fiveeighths in 58 seconds and it was the opinion of experts that he could have finished threequarters in 110 110SPIKE SPIKE HUMORS AS FALSE FALSEThere There is a persistent effort on the part of some of the New York sporting writers to tnock Morvich and his trainer Fred Burlew It has been charged that the horse was given a secret trial and failed to go the distance Mr Block has written here that there is not a word of truth in this statement and that it must have been made for some ulterior pur ¬ pose If the plan was to affect the odds it ias failed because Morvich has been backed steadily until from an opening price of G to 1 he is now quoted at 9 to 5 5Emil Emil Herz who perhaps has made the heaviest Kentucky book on the Derby has taken some big wagers at 2J to 1 against Morvich also accepting a recent bet of 10 000 at 11 to a Herz is a shrewd speculator and is probably only rounding up his book because he did not accept any wagers on Morvich higher than 3 to 1 He says that it is rather peculiar that none of the Lexington crowd even asked for a price against Mor ¬ vich but they did bet a little on everything else in the race raceThe The probable field of the Derby is thought here to be as follows go to the post an entry list exceeded only three times in recent years yearsOLYMPUS OLYMPUS SECOND CHOICE CHOICEThe The next horse to Morvich in public favor is Harry Payne Whitneys Olympus He showed his good class last year as a two yearold and his recent victory at Havre de Grace over Boniface was a sterling perform ¬ ance and entitles him to the honor of sec ¬ ond choice in the Derby Trainer Rowe has reserved stalls at Churchill Downs and his stable will be shipped there within the next few days with Whiskaway as the probable companion for Olympus Next in favor is E E Sinims Lucky Hour which ran second to Morvich in the Pimlico Futurity at one mile last fall He showed great speed in that contest leading in the stretch and only succumbed in the last sixteenth His victories in Maryland this spring show that he has improved as a threeyearold and he promises to be a sureenough contender in the Derby DerbyDeadlocks Deadlocks defeat of Surf Rider John Finn and Busy American at Lexington has brought him into prominence Robert Shannon has put him through a careful training routine at Churchill Downs since early in the winter ai d the horse has thrived on it gaining in weight and vigor While he had all the advantage of the weights in his race at Lexington he gave an exhibition of speeil that entitles him to consideration even if lie is called on to help set the pace with Moi vich This colt is said to have run threo quarters in 1 12 in his preparation for tl e Futurity last year and in that contest he was near the placed horses at the finish The stable is confident that he has more than a fighting chance to win the Derby but Colonel E R Bradley has bet 20000 to 1000 with his owner that he would not win The success of the Bradley pair Busy American and Bet Mosie in the Blue Grass Stakes Saturday over Startle John Finn and Surf Rider has created quite a furore and many are wondering if it is a forecast of another triumph in the Derby for the master of Idle Hour Farm as it was last year yearThis This completes the main Derby possibilities although there are a few outsiders which may earn the right to be mentioned as Derby starters before the Lexington meeting closes
