NOTED SUBURBAN HANDICAP TOD A J SALL BUT HIGHCLASS FIELD NAMED TO STRIVE FOR THE POPULAR EASTERN FIXTURE This days racing at Belmont Park will be marked by the running of the Suburban Handi ¬ cap Time was when the Suburban weights were announced early in the year and their ap ¬ pearance was eagerly awaited by followers of racing the country over The fact that future books soon afterward blossomed being not entirely disconnected with the widespread interest in the imposts allotted It is not that way now The Suburban is deprived of much of its former value and high repute as the foremost of American handicaps but it is not deprived of its wealth of historical associations and to New Yorkers at least its running is still a great racing occasion and sure to draw a great crowd of spectators to the big Long Island track trackThe The Suburban of today brings its winner more money than it did on the occasion of its first racing away back in 1884 when General Monroe War Eagb and Jack of Hearts fin ¬ ished heads apart in a desperate struggle But there were years in its more recent history when it was a handicap of greater value than any now run Its high tide mark was in 1903 when Ballot took 19750 when he defeated King James and Fair Play but it brought the win ¬ ners 17750 when Montana and Lowlander won in 1892 and 1893 respectively and over 516000 rewarded the winners in 1903 1904 1905 1906 and 1907 However the crack horses of those years were no better than the crack horses of today and those who will witness the race today will lack none of the thrills evoked by its decision in other years yearsIt It is to be regretted that instead of a dozen or more starters for the 1922 renewal of the Suburban only four are named as overnight acceptances However the high class of these four horses in a great measure makes amends for the small size of the field Mad Hatter Sennings Park Captain Alcock and Flying Cloud are each and all of them thoroughbreds of proven quality gifted with great speed and stamina and whichever wins will deservedly be entitled to join that select list of great horses that have triumphed in this famous race in years gone by Here are the overnight acceptances for the big race Horso Weight Rider Owner Trainer Odds OddsiIau iIau Hatter 130 E Sande Rancccas Stable S C Hildreth Even EvenSennings Sennings Park 127 F Keogh Westniont Stabb S P Harlan 2 1 1Captain Captain Alcock 108 C Ponce Quincy Stable J Fitzsimmons 31 31Flying Flying Cloud 102 B Marinelli M Hirsch M Hirsch 151
