SOUBRIQUETS BIG STAKE Scores Easily in Duke of York Handicap at Kempton. Park. Poisoned Arrow linns Good Race to Finish Second, with Tetrabunzhi Third Ideal Racing: "Weather at Course. LONDON, England, October 9. Next to the Jubilee Stakes the Duke of York Handicap is the most popular event of the flat racing: season at Kempton Park, and, though there have frequently been larger attendances than that of Saturday, the several inclosures were well filled here. The weather fortunately was favorable, but it is to be feared that backers, as a whole, did not fare well. One of those extraordinary rumors which j spread like wildfire on race courses was in circulation when the paddock was reached j to the effect that Soubriquet would not run j for the big race. No intelligible reason could be gleaned and the story proved an utterly j baseless one. j Moreover, Soubriquet won the race in easy j fashion, and those who picked up the extended prices here and there offered while the scare lasted found themselves on velvet long before the contest came on. llLUE LADY GOES TO POST. Certain variations in the constitution of the field, as predicted overnight, were found to exists when the numbers were displayed. Thus Blue Lady, after all, accompanied Tetrablmzia to the post. Mr. Tattersall, however, declared to win with the latter. Evan-der also entered the lists. Beary, which had been engaged for Sicyon, putting up three pounds overweight for the Duke of t Portlands colt, while the mount on Cicyon was assigned to Donoghue. This reshuffling led to a furore - in the market for Sicyon, which steadily but surely ousted Tetrabbazia from favoritism, eventually started- in clear command. r Sicyon, by the way, enjoyed a pull of fourteen pounds with the Manton filly for a length beating at Manchester in June, so 1 there was at least reasonable justification 1 for the view that he would now take his revenge. Soubriquet, like Tetrabbazia, was , well backed each way, and Poisoned Arrow was also a favorite medium for place investment. DELAY AT HARItlEK. An irritating delay of about ten minutes was caued by Lady Sleipner going to the starting point leisurely. It appeared inconceivable that this would have been permitted by the stewards, and afterward it was announced that they had called upon Sir Charles Nugent for an explanation and severely reprimanded him for giving instructions without official sanction. The field was off to a good start, and the outsider Port Boyal showed the way to Soubriquet and Tetrabbazia, with Sicyon, Blue Lady, Royal Alarm and White Satin prominent among the others. Soubriquet joined Port Royal after they had gone about half way, at which point Lady Sleipner took fliTrd place". Port Royal dropped back beaten as they swung into the straightaway and from then onward Soubriquet was always going like the winner, and Royal Alarm, one of the best backed horses,- apart from the favorites, drew into second place about a quarter of a mile from home, but soon gave up and it was left to Poisoned Arrow to follow the daughter of Lemberg home in front of Tetrabbazia. SMALL FIELDS IN SELLING ItACKS Prior to the big event the two selling races were contested by small fields, and in the first, the Brentford Handicap, the jady Taree, which" started in chief request, was beaten in hollow fashion by Be Cool. The winner, it will be recalled, was Glen An-dreds opponent in a match at the recent Newbury meeting, and it is a singular circumstance that he should prove successful so soon after the others further victory at Bath. Mr. Nagle retained his colt at ,500, which, therefore, is evidently thought something of. Donoghues mount. Miss "White, carried most support in the Waterloo Plate, with the Everywoman gelding and Farseeing heading the others in the market. Miss White successfully resisted the attentions of the other pair, but was herself caught -in the last stride and beaten by Lake Superior. The winner, which is tubed, is trained by Lines, who saddled a couple of successful platers at Nottingham earlier in the week.
